In an apparent mix-up, militants deny reports that a US Marine of Lebanese descent has been beheaded. The militants ask that we refer to their web site for official statements.

news.bbc.co.uk
A statement that the group had killed Cpl Wassef Ali Hassoun, an American of Lebanese origin, was made on two militant websites on Saturday.

But on its own website, Ansar al-Sunna denied responsibility for the statement.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

This is a indication either of some sort of breakdown in the terrorists' network, or of an operation to encourage a breakdown. The rivalry for top terrorist must be tremendous; it seems the competition is getting hot.

The BBC's list of Hostages killed is incomplete:

14 April: Fabrizio Quattrocchi, 36, Italian security guard is shot dead
11 May: Nick Berg, 26, US businessman is beheaded
22 June: Kim Sun-il, 33, South Korean translator is beheaded
29 June: Keith Maupin, 20, US soldier is reportedly killed (not confirmed)

Notably, Paul Johnson's name is missing from the list.

I accessed the Ansar al-Sunna website, ansar-alsonnah.8m.com... but it is in Arabic. Does anyone have an English page?

Edit to correct Johnson's first name

I don't get it. There are conflicting stories about the fate of this U.S Marine. Because the Ansar al-Sunna group is a militant group, wouldn't they want to actually take the responsibility for something like this?

I see a pattern developing here: first innocent American citizens, an innocent Korean citizen, now a U.S Marine. There is going to be a different person, maybe from a different Country that will be beheaded. Maybe a British soldier will be next.

Think about it. Why are they denying it? Maybe it's because the beheading was being carried out by those rogue CIA paid mercenaries claiming to be such and such a group to stir up more fury.

wow I'm not the only one who thinks the CIA has something to do with this. It seems like all the beheading to date served as some kind of diversionary purpose. For example,Nick Berg was beheaded after the Abu Gareib prison scandal. The one that strikes me the oddest is that they released the turkish hostages right after Nato pledged to help with iraq. I believe this Corporal was beheaded because he possible knew something and was trying to flee to Lebanon...his home country. No matter how extreme Muslims can be they will not kill their own.

Additional information from Sky News:

Confusion surrounds the fate of a US marine kidnapped in Iraq. The militant group believed to be holding Wassef Ali Hassoun has denied executing him.

www.sky.com...

The US military is checking into the reports concerning the kidnapped Marine.

Minor nit - the turkish hostages were released after their company vowed to stop doing business in Iraq. In other words, they pulled a "Spain". It had noting to do with NATO.

Two Turkish hostages were freed in Iraq today, only days after their employer agreed to stop doing business with the US military.

An Al-Jazeera television report states that a U.S. Marine once thought to have been executed is alive and has been taken to "a place of safety" ...whatever that means.
