Sunde To Launch Open, Distributed Alternative to ICANN

The Pirate Bay trial may currently not be going alright, but Peter Sunde, Swedish co-founder of The Pirate Bay, is already working on his next project. Surely spurred by the recent seizures of domains by Big Content the US government, Sunde has unveiled he's working on an open, distributed alternative to ICANN's root server.

Firstly, I tried searching but couldn't find this posted yet, if it was I apologize. Secondly, as most of you know the US Government along with huge corporations and special interest groups are trying to stop copyright infringement by using ICANN to shut down websites for hosting or linking to pirated material. The problem is its being abused and will continue to be abused and this gives the US the power to basically impose its will on anyone, from any country. So I hope Sunde's new project goes well and I wish him and his team the best of luck.

It doesn't help that ICANN turned over a lot of its power earlier this year to private interest. I'm sure whoever writes the biggest check will get what ever domains they dislike shut off now. I for one am in support of an organization with similar goals as the GPL (GNU Public License) running the Domain system for the web.
