Drugs (other then marijuana) were actually the downfall and major degenerating cause of the demise of what the original hippie movement was about.

The drug movment was actually a separate movement that just happened to coincide at the same time in the same area as the political movement started by 4 college students.

Losers and drug addicts are - - losers and drug addicts. They are not Hippies. Not in the true sense of what it means to be from that movement.

You all need to go read some history.

They were not dirty - but did try to be more natural by not using chemical soaps and stuff.

Nothing wrong with hippies.

About 'buying their crap'... guess what, we're not selling anything. We didn't then and never will. One either lives a particular kind of life that doesn't include hatred or stereotyping or one does not. Personally, I don't care how others live their lives as long as it doesn't make my own life completely unbearable. I'll choose friends that are pleasant company, thanks very much.

That's right. Especially certain crystaline drugs that made people crazy. Drugs of those sorts were avoided by those who had two brain cells to rub together.

Nobody really understands what happened in such a short time. Music, philosophy and a large contingent of WWII veterans' children somehow were presented with a unified thought... that of togetherness and a gutteral dislike of the Viet Nam war. From those early days, millions of others came in to join in the fun... but that's all it was... just fun. They thought it was a toga party and everybody could go all Dionysian and get wasted.

That's why the movement didn't last long... above ground We're still here, we still feel the same way and have passed on our ideals to our children. You can squash a hippie, but you can't kill an idea.

Your mistake is that you assume that everybody who had long hair in the 60's and 70's was a hippie. You are looking at Google Images pictures of whichever group and you see people with long hair, so they must be carrying the "Hippie Message" with their violent ways. Right?

The problem is that, as has been so eloquently explained to you already, those were not hippie values. Those people were not hippies. they were terrorists with long hair who were active during the hippie era. End Of Story.

Combine some education with your intelligence and you will do just fine young padwan.

California? My, my, we are getting into the microcosm here, aren't we. News to you, my friend... it didn't just happen in America, it was everywhere in the western world.

Here's a hint... we, the ones who actually LIVED during that time, are the sons and daughters of WWII veterans. Our fathers, mine included, were forever changed by that conflict and, although they didn't say much about the experience, they said enough to influence us to be against the war... any war. That's the main theme.

To be a hippie was to basically be anti-war.
