WikiLeaks support protest in Sydney this Friday

Supporters of the website Wikileaks will mobilise on Friday (10/12/10) to protest against the backlash it has faced for its release of more than 250,000 US government cables.
The rally date coincides with International Human Rights Day.
Rally organisers say the Australian government has failed to uphold the human rights of Wikileaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange.
“The Australian government should be ashamed for its attacks on Wikileaks, which has been charged with no crime”, spokesperson Simon Butler said. “Australia should not join the campaign to censor Wikileaks. Wikileaks has released evidence of government lies and duplicity — information that, as citizens, we have a right to know. “We want the Gillard government to make sure Julian Assange has the same basic rights as every other Australian citizen. Threats have been made against Assange’s life, the Australian government has a duty to protect him, not threaten him.”
The rally will take place at Sydney Town Hall @ 1pm, Friday December 10.

I wish that I could attend this protest, not so much in defence of wikileaks but in protest of his treatment by the Australian government.
Australian has faced a fairly constant attack on free rights since 9/11, from anti association laws to attempts to filter the internet.
It's about time we took a stand.

The USA is a Republic but Australia is a full and democratic society. Politicians have a right to their opinion in regards to Wikileaks but the truth of the matter is we have a right to know the truth of whats going when Govts/financial institutions/big corporations including pharma corporations around the world are hiding secrets of unethical and immoral behaviour that can and do have far reaching consequences to our nations, our people and including our military (who are told what to do, not to ask questions).

I don't agree with every leak via Wikileaks but politicians are going down a slippery slope if politicians think they can do what they want when they want and not be answerable to their people.

We are not a Republic, we are not a Socialist nation, we are not a Communist one either. We hold our Democratic values in the highest of esteem. When Govts around the world take our democratic freedoms and rights away from the truth, we're all in deep trouble.

500 join protest

MORE than 500 people have rallied outside Sydney's Town Hall to protest against the public prosecution of WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange. Greens Senator-elect Lee Rhiannon criticised the Federal Government's response to the 250,000 documents leaked by Wikileaks in recent weeks. "Julian Assange is an Australian. That makes me and I'm sure it makes you feel very proud," Ms Rhiannon told the crowd. "But we can certainly not feel proud of our Government."
