Saying Vitamin D and calcium supplements are unnecessary is a bit misleading....

Dietary vitamin and mineral intake is just as important as cell uptake.

Insulin resistance and increased insulin levels and will inhibit calcium uptake (which is why osteoporosis is so strongly associated with insulin resistance). So it's really pointless to supplement calcium if you're diabetic (type 2) or pre-diabetic. In fact, it's dangerous. If you can't absorb the excess exogenous calcium it will begin to deposit in organs and blood vessels.

Insulin resistance also inhibits magnesium uptake. In context, this is important for two reasons. Magnesium and calcium levels react to one another to maintain homeostasis. Therefore, a change in one causes a change in the other. The other reason is that magnesium is essential for Vitamin D metabolism.

So...one can be overconsuming certain vitamins and minerals (D and calcium) and yet be deficient at the cellular level.

Further to my last post, in today's Natural News:

"(NaturalNews) Earlier this week, the Institute of Medicine finally got around to reluctantly admitting that people need more vitamin D. Raising the daily intake recommendation from 200 IUs to 600 IUs still leaves most people pitifully vitamin D deficient, and a flood of scientific research that has emerged over the last four years reveals that vitamin D deficiency causes cancer, osteoporosis, depression, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders and depression.

In other words, vitamin D deficiency is the cornerstone of the pharmaceutical industry's profit machine. Most of the really big money now being shoveled into the cancer industry and the drug companies comes from patients who are woefully deficient in vitamin D.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the dietary supplement industry's trade association, called the new vitamin D recommendations "a modest step in the right direction that fell short of truly capturing the extensive and positive research that has consistently supported the need for people to significantly raise their vitamin D levels." (www.prnewswire.com...)

According to scientific studies, right now 70 percent of whites are deficient in vitamin D, and 97 percent of African Americans are deficient, resulting in outrageously higher rates of cancer among blacks compared to whites (www.naturalnews.com...). The Institute of Medicine curiously claims such deficiencies do not exist, however.

Nutritionally-aware health professionals had hoped the Institute of Medicine might suggest raising the daily intake of vitamin D to a level that would actually help prevent cancer: 2000 IUs a day, or even as much as 4000 IUs a day. Most informed nutritionists right now recommend anywhere from 2000 IUs to 4000 IUs per day for adults, and the research on the connection between cancer and vitamin D is clear: Vitamin D prevents 77 percent of all cancers (www.naturalnews.com...)...."

Continues at www.naturalnews.com...

I trust this helps clarify the matter.

Peace

I found it odd that this is in Canadian news, the lowering of the requirement. When they decided a couple of years ago, that we were deficient up here, due to less sunshine, they had tested people, and found the sickest had deficiencies, and the healthiest had good strong levels of Vit D.

Now it seems they're saying that we get enough sunshine throughout North America. As if we're going out in -20 or below, and getting sunshine
It seems they are ignoring the tests they did a couple of years ago, or expecting us to forget that they did them.

If they start to make it hard or too costly to get supplements, we need to remember seafood like herring has 1300 iu per 3 oz, and sardines, salmon and other seafood will also give us decent amounts. Stick with smaller fish, it's less polluted, and make sure it's from no where near the Gulf of Mexico.

The sun is the very best way to get vitamin D. Don't ever use the carcinogenic sunscreen, peeps!

Best to get a minimum of 20 minutes midday sun bare-chested, weather permitting
