Just Breaking South Korean Defense Minister Resigns

www.cbc.ca

South Korea's defence minister tendered his resignation Thursday, just two days after a North Korea artillery attack killed four people on the small island of Yeonpyeong.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak accepted the resignation of Kim Tae-young.

This seems a strange move. Why and what caused this decision? This resignation comes after a visit to the area hit by North korea's attack and with US war ships headed to the region for sundays game of chicken. We will have to follow this news. Not a whole lot of explinations as of yet. Could it be that he feaars an actual all out war or that he possibly called for an all out assualt on the north but the South said NO, no war unless the USA say's it's ok. Something must have really got the defense minister angry enough to say that's it.

Like you say any number of reasons, and these things are not as clear as you would assume, like say 100 years back something like this would be clearer.

One of two things either he has be told something he doesn't like or will not follow
OR
He has been repremanded for provoking NK , and believe me they were provoked not the other way around .

or maybe held responsible for firing 'close to or inside' norths waters? therefore causing potential war.

It is one of two things, probably.

1) They needed a fall guy to say that somebody should have been able to anticipate and stop the North Korean attack.
2) He called for a strong military response to the attack but was turned down, and so decided he was not the right guy to be in this post if the South Korean Government is going to stand by and keep letting the North sink ships, attack bases and civilian areas etc. with no "in kind" counter-strikes.

This on the heels of Sundays big showdown with US warships playing the game with South Korea.

It's going to be interesting how this unfolds. We have The US Obama & Company on one side calling China to ask NK to resolve this peacfully all the...while sending War Ships to play Sunday...?????

let's talk this out? Hey NK like our big guns?

This article says it's because the response wasn't strong enough.

President Lee Myung-Bak accepted the minister's resignation, which follows criticism for the country's allegedly weak response to North Korea's deadly shelling of a border island on Tuesday.

The Australian

Wikipedia says the current government is the Grand National Party which is a conservative government which is very pro US and advocates a stricter stance toward North Korea.

This seems like a face saving movement by the government and although I don't know much about the internal politics of South Korea, it would indicate a shift further to the right to cater to the more hardline factions in the party.

well because i believe that the south admitted they were firing shells in their own sea territory during a training exercise, but truth is they may have crossed the line

I think this could well be a likely cause, he's probably thinking that there's no point being a defence minister if every move they make has to be approved/dictated by the U.S.

When North Korea fired upon the island where citizens lived it was an ACT OF WAR. South Korea knew it would cause North Korea to retalliate. And They DID! When all hell broke loose the south backed down. The south did not commence thier war training after the bombings. if they knew they were in the right wouldn't you think they would of coontinued? North Korea showd it's might in the mist of this fight and the south backed down again.

Now this is important, When the South resumes it's war training this Sunday they will have the US playing with them. I don't think the US will back down. There's a new big dog in the fight this time. A lot is going on behind the scenes. China and Russia dumping the dollar. India placing troops on the border of China,, The US worried about the development of nukes by NK...The LA missile crisis...plane?

I believe the SK defense minister was fed up and knew it was an act of war yet was not allowd to do his job. No we must wait for the US war ships.....while innocent civilians were killed.

AOL news just came out with a bit more detailed report on the why The defense Minister resigned? Fired?

www.aolnews.com...

Well did he resign or was he fired?

The George Washington being the largest war ship in the world playing with south Korea Sunday....Now don't you just think this will surly get NK to attack with vengence? We are on the brink of all out war.
Obama needs it to win back the favor of the American people or he's done. And what a way to bring the dollar back.

Lot of BS in the past but my hunch......WAR! and just maybe WW3

Pray for peace...We Need It!

I Agree, this does not feel or look good at all.

Didn't Baba vanga say/predict that WW3 would start out as a scurmish or regular war (if there is such a thing) and envelope other nations as things escalate?

This is something to be truely concerned about, especially since I am currently residing in Japan.

Actually, I feel this is so concerning I'm selling my business and heading home to New Zealand ASAP.

God Help Us All.

I suspect there may be a lot of resignations coming along with the wikileaks documents.

It might just be the timing.
