GM food works in the US because Americans have a high degree of trust in the Dept of Agriculture and are rarely let down. Europe on the other hand generally has little trust in government oversight of food and therefor prefers local sources as you would expect with 50 small separate countries. When things like mad cow disease happen in Europe they tend to be a little more widespread because you have a lot of separate entities to work through to shore up the bad food supplies. I would venture to say this has a lot to do with their eating habits too as I don't hear of obesity epidemics or eating disorders very often outside our boarders.

Its entirely possible that simply holding people accountable for what they eat might have everyone growing their own food, but as long as I can get a chicken sandwich for a dollar less than 4 minutes from the time I crave it; I have no concern where or how the lettuce or flour grain was grown or for that matter, where and how the chicken spent its life.

It is the apex of human arrogance to presume we understand the ecosystem and that we are separate from it. Nothing we do will be without consequence. Nothing that happens the rest of the world over, involving man or not, will not be without consequence.

Nothing we could ever create in a lab could be more detrimental to our survival than what can happen on its own each and every day.

"Organic" farming methods attempt to use 'natural' ways of killing plants and abstaining pests from the food supply. Some genetically altered plants have pesticides built into them - substances toxic to insects that eat them (much like how other plants contain substances that are toxic to us, but not other animals). We also use chemicals to obliterate populations of pests.

Nothing is without "natural enemies." Now, there are unprecedented events - such as the appearance of human beings, the development of life, etc. Again - you are wanting to try and distinguish between "natural evolution" and man's genetic experiments. There is no effective difference in the concepts of ecology. Trying to take a snapshot of the environment and preserve it is simply ignorant. The world is changing and will continue to change whether we all wake up tomorrow, or not - whether we genetically modify corn, or not.

Except it doesn't work this way. Bees collect pollen and nectar - and the toxins are simply not present in those regions of the plant, or excreted in those substances. The toxin is present in the body of the plant - the leaves and stems, and occasionally the fruit (depending upon what pest is being countered and a number of other factors). The toxins would, therefor, only impact species that eat the plant, itself. The bee population would go rather unaffected.

Speaking of bees... they have been 'mysteriously' disappearing these past six decades or more. I'm sure you've already got the answer for why it's happening, and how it's a conspiracy to control the price of rice in Egypt, but the machinations are rather moot to the point. That point is - we may be facing an extinction. Interestingly enough - not our own, but a species we are very entwined with. Developing crops that can fruit without pollination, and/or other methods of pollination would not be a bad idea if we are looking at a world where the bee population is practically non-existent.

S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010, is the most dangerous bill in US history. S 510 would preclude the public’s right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes. It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one’s choice. It will be unconstitutional and contrary to natural law. If S 510 passes it will give Monsanto unlimited power over all US seed, food supplements, food and farming.

It is unfortunate that the House Vote on S 510 has been postponed until after Thanksgiving! This bill was considered in committee which has recommended it be considered by the Senate as a whole. Although it has been placed on a calendar of business, the order in which legislation is considered and voted on is determined by the majority party leadership. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill.

While Monsanto has stated publicly that they have nothing to gain from the passing of this bill; this is UNTRUE! Monsanto's representatives, in the Clinton days, wrote and introduced this bill. !

PLEASE - contact your Congressional members in regard to S 510! And say NO to GMO!

This pesky bug, called diabrotica vergifera, burrows in the newly forming roots of the corn plant and causes the plant to wither and eventually die. Farmers have long sought some type of pesticide to kill the bug and, in 2003, Bayer Pharmaceutical introduced a new product called Clothianidin. Their own studies showed that this pesticide was highly toxic to bees but justified the widespread use because it could be applied to corn seed and would be buried in the soil where it would presumably be harmless to other creatures.

Farmers were instructed to buy special machines that would coat their seeds multiple times with clothianidin and a special adhesive, dry the seeds, and then plant them. The poison is supposed to stick to the seed coat and to be toxic to the rootworm as it attempts to burrow in to the newly forming roots.

Bayer, who make the pesticide, and Monsanto, who make the adhesive, have patented the method of coating their proprietary seeds with clothianidin, which are now growing all over the globe.

And Colony Collapse Disorder is a simple case of poisoning -- similar to the DDT bird kill-off decades ago.

In July of 2007, a German crop was infested with the rootworm. The German government ordered that every possible method should be used to eradicate this pest, including the use of clothianidin. Shortly after the seeds were planted, in May of 2008, some 330-million bees abruptly died!

According to the German Research Center for Cultivated Plants, 29 out of 30 dead bees had been killed by direct contact with clothianidin.

The German-based Coalition Against Bayer Dangers, said: "We have been pointing out the risks of neonicotinoids for almost 10 years now. This proves without a doubt that the chemicals can come into contact with bees and kill them. These pesticides shouldn't be on the market."

An investigation revealed that the seed coating did not stay in the soil but was introduced to the air (and the rest of the plant) by simple abrasion -- the rubbing together of seeds -- as they are stored, moved and injected in to the soil by farming machines.

NOW The EPA has outlawed Clothianidin just this year. But how long will it take the bees to recover from Monsanto and Bayers GREED!!!!!

Could you then explain how these seeds then make it into the wild?
Possibly cross pollination? passing on the traits or would you have us believe that all these seeds just shrivel up and die? and if so, what will they do to our internal organs over a lifetime of ingesting?
No long term study has been done on the effects, I use Ciguatera as an example, small amounts of Ciguatera toxins causes no advers effects, but over a period of time the accumulation in our systems causes
all types of wonderful symptoms from nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, to allodynia,
So introducing a hybridized species into an enviroment may have an adverse effect, GM crops are at that end of the scale where we should just halt them until a long term study can be done and not just use human populations as test subjects so big corperations can just get richer
