Heads up. Tibet is not the Vatican of buddism. In fact Tibet is nothing anymore. The Chinese have seen to that. Bhuddism is Indian in origin and if anything should go there. BUT since this was discovered in Afghanistan it should be preserved as it's own history not moved to another country.

The path to hell is lined with good intentions.

After 1,700 years, Buddhas fall to Taliban dynamite

After failing to destroy the 1,700-year-old sandstone statues of Buddha with anti-aircraft and tank fire, the Taliban brought a lorryload of dynamite from Kabul. A Western observer said: "They drilled holes into the torsos of the two statues and then placed dynamite charges inside the holes to blow them up."

The operation to wreck the statues carved into a cliff in the Bamiyan Valley in the Hindu Kush mountains of central Afghanistan was supervised by Mullah Obaidullah, the Taliban defence minister. There has been an international outcry since Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban leader, issued a special edict on Feb 26 ordering the destruction of all non-Islamic statues.

Why does it need to be returned to the Dalai Lama and Tibet? do they 'own Budhism?

There are Budhist shrines and relics even as far across to Morocco. Like all religions, its messengers travelled far and wide.

Maybe we should send all our Bibles back to Jersulalem and do the same in removing brick by brick every Christian Church and ship them back to the Holy Land as well according to your logic?

"The complexities of todays religions can be attributed to one basic fact. The lack of a working lunatic asylum in Jerusalem 4000 years ago"

If you want to run that thread and post, how about emptying the worlds museums of Egyptina artifcats and sending them all back to Egypt

All gathering up all the Australian Aboriginal art and artifacts and send them back too

These things belong to the people of Afghanistan, if THEY are of world value UNESCO will then go through thr process to 'list' them

Not that The United States cares about that. When our RAAF F/A-18 pilots were tasked with a strike against tanks deployed around an identified UNESCO site with all the correct markings on navigation maps desiginated the site as a UNESCO World heritage site and refused to drop their ordance as per the rules of war.

The United States just sent there own planes into do the job instead.

Where are all tha antiquties from the Bagdad museum your troops plundered? You have one hard core officer lawyer working his arse off to try and track them down, why not throw your weight behind his effort before dictating to the Afghanis where their 'relics should go and who they belong to..

"542 Antiquities Looted in Iraq War Return Home. Where Are the Rest?"

Gold earrings made for an Assyrian queen, a sacred 4,000-year-old statue, and 540 other looted pieces of Iraq's ancient history were formally returned to Iraq on Monday in what was billed as a triumph of justice and international cooperation.

so what? they belonged to the people of Afghanistan its theirs to blow up if they want...(especially if you have fools suggesting they should be 'exported out' against their wish without consultation

I mean Americans worship their car culture don't they? are prepared to go to war to secure oil for their Recreational Vehicles?

I don't see any of us other nations imposing cultural restrictions on Americans joy in wanting to drive along their highways and pepper road signs full of bullet and shot gun holes?

Maybe the rest of the world should send in our armies to save all your road signs from wanton destruction so we can preserve the evidence of American car culture for future generation to look at and wonder in 1000 years from now?

Did you bother to read your own link

The earrings were recognized by Iraqi archaeologists as part of the treasures of Nimrud, excavated in 1989 when an Iraqi team discovered a royal tomb overlooked by previous British excavations. They were believed stolen from the Baghdad Museum before the collection was put into safekeeping in bank vaults before the 1991 war with the US over Mr. Hussein's invasion of Kuwait.

The US didn't go into Baghdad in 1991
Apparently the earrings were stolen by Iraqis back in 1991 but recently retrieved with other items looted by some US forces.

so what are you suggesting, remove the art and treasures that are by birthright the property of the Afghani people and instead have some US contractor erect a huge billboard all lit up by neon lights screaming out "Drink Coca Cola?

What is it with you people, cant you develop your own culture and have an immediate intellectual cringe when you find evidence of other people having a history of civilised culture such as Budhism before you were even thought of? Or Babylonian antiquities in Iraq...?

Go put on a jazz record or something...

Yeah ok. Keep that head in the sand....

Chinese firms sign Iraq oil deal

UK oil company, British Petroleum and the China National Petroleum Corporation have signed Iraq's first major new oil deal since the 2003 US-led invasion.

The contract signed on Tuesday is to develop the country's southern Rumaila oilfield, one of the world's biggest.

Foreign companies get Iraq oil contracts

Iraqi Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani said the awarded oil fields could potentially produce up to 4.7 million barrels a day, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Among the awarded oil fields were Iraq's Majnoon and West Qurna Phase 2 sites.

A consortium involving the Russian oil company, Lukoil Holdings, was given the contract to West Qurna Phase 2. Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Malaysia's Petronas oil and gas company were awarded Majnoon.

Petronas, along with France's Total and the China National Petroleum Corp., were awarded the Halfaya oil field.

To the person who posted well maybe this is evidence that Afghans aren't muslims after all.

I weep for our lads having to work in the field beside you mob..

Do you know who founded the city of Kandahar in Afghanistan?

Alexander the Great...heard of him? he came passing through on his way to give the Indian Empire a touch up.

Before they were Budhists they were actually Ancient Greeks.... you heard of those guys? founders of democracy, peoples assemblies.

Go teach your young child killer storm trooper, killers raise on video games to shoot everything that moves to maybe have a sit down, take your helmet and sunglasses off and have a chat to the locals...

You might find your self 'enlightened' and no-one has conquered these people since Alexander the Great, not the Indians, the Brits, the Russkies

Of of course you guys are special. whats your secret?

Your politco leaders have already thrown in the hand are in negotiation with moderate Taliban as you young keep getting killed.

The sooner us Aussies get out of their and back to focusing on our patch the better.

What is it that you're trying to say here? First you state it's their country and if they want to blow stuff up they should then you turn around and say that it's their ancient culture that should be preserved. Where do you stand exactly? I think it should stay SAFELY in Afghanistan.

What is it with you people, cant you develop your own culture and have an immediate intellectual cringe when you find evidence of other people having a history of civilised culture such as Budhism before you were even thought of? Or Babylonian antiquities in Iraq...?

You seem to have a chip on your shoulder here. The Chinese are the ones contracted to as the article states "Exploit" the copper in doing so it will destroy the site in roughly 2 to 3 years

Go put on a jazz record or something...

You left out Genghis Khan. Like Alexander they had to practicably exterminate the population in order to "Conquer" them. I highly doubt anybody wants to exterminate the Afghans these days.

I thought that Afghanistan was such an unsafe country. How can the Chinese dig out copper there unstalked by the Taliban? Are they protected by Nato forces?

Alexander conquered Afghanistan in 326 BC, and the Buddha temple was built around 600-700 BC, about 400 years earlier. So they already were Buddhists before the Greeks came.

Does not have to be moved. Just find the right owners of the Monastery and allow them to over see the excavation and items found. Their history will have the truths in oral traditions to let us know more if we include them.

Facinating find! Indeed there are two things that are sad about this find... 1. that the Taliban tried to dfestroy the site and 2. because of the deadline, leaving the archeologists with almost no way of salvaging the remains.

just a heads up.

according to Mircea Eliade, who wroted SHAMANISM - Archiac Techniques of Ecstacy-

Buddism had its roots in IRANIAN Shamanism.

even something as drastically different as Buddism compared to Christianity, it all started off in Persian 'myths.'

since the bible is based on sumerian myths as well, that means the first 'religion' was about idiot aliens who came to earth to create a race of slaves.

whether or not they were here is debatable. the problem is the elitists amongst us, (the chozen, rothschilds, warburgs, rockefellers, the kings and queens, merovingian blood line, rothschilds, bush, obamas, clintons, palins, etc) believe in this mythology. hence their ability to hurt people in their quest for money and power.

to these elitists, we are just cattle, or slaves.
