It all boils down to one simple compelling concept: Social Value.

It's so high up there that people are compelled to stick to it.
I have my reason for playing it, and I too have gone above and beyond the standards for an average player by dominating the competitive field.

But that doesn't stop me from playing the Xenosaga series, NIER, and a number of other compelling and amazing titles while having enough time for school, work, friends, and most especially family.

Don't hate player, nor the game, hate the market.

Good point. I play the Call of Duty series quite a bit (6-7 days playtime CoD 4, 28 days MW 2, working on 5 days BO). But, I also have a part-time job, just graduated from college, engage in another hobby (sports cards) and play other games (right now - Bad Company 2, FF XIII, GTA IV).

So you're fine with them taking what should be an xpac and selling it for $60?

As for the "sameness" of the Call of Duty franchise: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If it isn't broken and they don't want to innovate, then they should release it as what it really is: an expansion. All they've been doing from CoD4 through to BO has been expanding on the previous game, not changing much outside of adding customization. You see, expanding a game usually means releasing an expansion. Not releasing it as a whole new game for $60 to play more of the same.

Look at how what they're doing in Battlefield 3 compared to Battlefield 2. That's what a sequel should look like.

Despite having bought Black Ops, I concur with your statement concerning the caliber of change a equal must have in order to be a worthy successor.

There are some defining aspects of COD that simply cannot be expanded on simply because its definitive for the title. As an arcade shooter, you can only do so much to it's core aspects without destroying it. Most of it has already been ruined due to the nature of its target audience, but it has improved on its personalization aspects.

COD is a multi-paced action shooting game with a blend of tactical game play in respect to the gametype. Regardless, its one of the only shooters that literally allows multiple play styles to work with environments that works well enough to make it happen.

Having effectively utilized multitudes of weapons and combination's, along with playstyles.... I can attest to games capability to cater to a large margin of play styles.

I think part of the problem with the stagnation of the CoD series is they keep getting Treyarch to develop games and they seem to have no creativity at all. CoD4 was the original Infinity Ward and it was one of the most impressive and unique FPS's to date. Then they got Treyarch to do WaW, where Treyarch went back to WWII (as if there hadn't been enough of those) and the only new feature introduced was zombies. They then went back to Infinity Ward for MW2 which was great on the consoles. It wasn't a huge step forward, but it did at least introduce a bigger variety attachments, equipment and killstreaks. They dropped the ball with the PC version though with the lack of dedicated server support. Then they went back to Treyarch for Black Ops, which is essentially an MW2 clone. They switched around a few weapons, changed the UI, threw in different maps and shipped it out. I don't have much hope for MW3 either, Raven is developing it. They've had a few decent games but nothing outstanding.

I played COD and thought that it was so slow it was like playing a wartime rpg.

It's one of the best FPS out there, it has some good story lines, graphics are good, has to do with real history topics, even if the stories are different the places are usually close to being real

The graphics were good back in 2007 when CoD4 came out. Since they haven't upgraded the engine AT ALL in that time, it's starting to look dated. The storylines are relatively uncreative, but that's not what they aim for with the single player. Intead they focus on those jaw-dropping moments, at least until Black Ops where I can't really remember a single moment that made me go "What the hell just happened!"

I can undertsand why alot of people play on Call of Duty so much, after having played on it alot myself.
I think the reason i enjoy it so much, is the fact that for a while ive been thinking about joining the armed forces, and COD can be a form of reliefe from a day to day life also, the apeal to me of team, objective based game, seems to be quite high.

It is the same exact thing for me. I got nothing else to say.

The reason people obsess over it is because it is easy to pick up and play and unbelievably easy also.
