Oh man .. I'd love a twinkie! I need the calories but can't have 'em cuz of the sugar and flour ...
I WANT!!
A twinkie with ice cream and chocolate sauce! Heck .. a chocolate twinkie!
Or a vanilla twinkie with one of those chocolate shells covering it! mmmmmmmmmmmmm
Or a twinkie with a hostess cupcake kicker on the side ...
a vanilla and a chocolate cupcake.
Heck .. throw some vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce on that too!
Then some whip cream and crumbled oreo cookies with a cherry on top.
No wait .. wait ... I've got it ...

In a big bowl ... a vanilla twinkie, a chocolate twinkie, a vanilla hostess cupcake, a chocolate hostess cupcake, vanilla bean ice cream, death by chocolate ice cream, coffee ice cream, cherry ice cream, then whipped cream over it all with crushed oreos and choclate fudge on top of the whipped cream ... then the cherries ... bunches of them. Have a extra giant ice cold coke sitting by to wash it all down with (make an ice cream float in your stomach).

OMG ... I WANT IT!

If sugar makes him lose weight - Wonder if the guy would lose weight with that?
It would kill me. I'd die on the spot, but I'd be happy!!

It came down to calorie count... And nothing more...

This is similar to how it doesn't matter the geography of a city, the population level dictates so much...

It's to the point, that i bet as long as you get at least X calories and no more than Y calories a day, that your body will figure it out...

Though keep in mind, he took protein shakes and multivitamins

hell, might as well just go all the way!

Deep-Fried Twinkies From Good Morning America and Janet K. Keeler, St. Petersburg Times food editor Fruit recipes Twinkies might seem like enough of a treat, but this recipe calls for deep frying the cream-filled snack with batter and eating it like a popsicle. To sweeten the deal, there's a recipe for berry sauce, too. Ingredients # 6 Twinkies # Popsicle sticks # 4 cups vegetable oil # Flour for dusting # 1 cup milk # 2 tablespoons vinegar # 1 Tablespoon oil # 1 cup flour # 1 teaspoon baking powder # 1/2 teaspoon salt Directions 1. Chill or freeze Twinkies for several hours or overnight. 2. Heat 4 cups vegetable oil in deep fryer to about 375 degrees. 3. Mix together milk, vinegar and oil. 4. In another bowl, blend flour, baking powder and salt. 5. Whisk wet ingredients into dry and continue mixing until smooth. Refrigerate while oil heats. 6. Push stick into Twinkie lengthwise, leaving about 2 inches to use as a handle, dust with flour and dip into the batter. Rotate Twinkie until batter covers entire cake. 7. Place carefully in hot oil. The Twinkie will float, so hold it under with a utensil to ensure even browning. It should turn golden in 3 to 4 minutes. Depending on the size of your deep fryer, you might be able to fry only one at a time, two at the most. 8. Remove Twinkie to paper towel and let drain. Remove stick and allow Twinkie to sit for about 5 minutes before serving. Makes 6. Variation: Slice Twinkie into 4 pieces. Flour and batter each before frying. With this treatment, one Twinkie will serve two people if accompanied by a sauce. Berry Sauce Ingredients # 1 10-ounce jar of seedless raspberry preserves # 1 cup fresh or frozen mixed berries Directions 1. In a saucepan, heat preserves over low heat until melted. 2. Add 1 cup of fresh or frozen mixed berries. 3. Heat until sauce just simmers. 4. Cover; refrigerate until served. Makes 1 1/2 cups. Source: Janet K. Keeler, St. Petersburg Times food editor

Lame Lame Lame

I can go down to the streets of Detroit and find plenty of crack whores who are on the crack and booze diet that are skinny as heck.

Just because something makes you lose weight doesn't make it healthy.

No one claimed it was healthy... Just that it worked

Again, I'm amazed at how many people responded without reading the article. The dude looks just as solid, nourished, and healthy as any bran muncher out there.

It really is about calories. If you start to consider calories as fuel instead of just some crazy number, you will equalize your weight as needed. The thing to remember is that calorie heavy foods may not necessarily provide you with the bulk to satisfy. That's why it pays to be selective on your fuels sources.

To maintain my current weight based on my height, exercise schedule and age, I would need to eat 2785 calories per day. If I reduce it to 2282, I'd notice fat loss. If I reduce it to 1936, I'd notice more fat loss, but I'm on the edge of putting my body in starvation mode.

So based on the 2282 number, I can eat 15.2 Twinkies each day and nothing else. Is that going to satisfy me? Most likely not. I need something to keep me going. Low-fat proteins and fiber would be fine choices, but the point is, I need to stay very close to the 2282.

Too bad for me, I love a good beer which is about 200 calories per 12 oz.

No kidding. Eat something that will make you crap your brains out all day and that will work too. Starvation works too. None of it is healthy and it's pointless to talk about.

It's like saying to someone, "I can make your illness go away by killing you."

Well yes you can, but it's a non sequitur only meant to get someone's name in the paper and to alllow stupid people to fantasize about going on a junk food diet.

I'll tell you guys exactly what happened in this case.

Yes, he is correct in that it really is a matter of 'calories in versus calories out.' If you eat at a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. If you eat at a calorie surplus, you will gain weight. Notice the word 'weight' and not necessarily 'fat.'

So you can eat at a calorie deficit by eating donuts, chips, and sodas and you will lose weight.

But...

You are destroying the metabolism because your body is processing MUSCLE as well as fat.

So I have no doubt he lost 27 lbs. However, he probably lot A LOT of muscle. You absolutely must have a good macro-nutrient balance as well as calorie count. Ideally, eat 1 gram of protein for every 1 pound of lean mass. This will help maintain your muscle during dieting so you will ensure optimal fat loss instead of muscle loss.

I bet the rent this man's body composition got worse. He most likely now has a higher percentage of body fat and a lower percentage of lean tissue.

He will now gain the weight back because he tore up his metabolism by wasting away his muscle.

According to the article and his fb page he did lose fat:

Haub's body fat dropped from 33.4 to 24.9 percent. This posed the question: What matters more for weight loss, the quantity or quality of calories?

CNN Article
Prof Haub Diet fb Page

Which doesn't mean that he didn't also lose muscle. But he stated that his exercise level is moderate, which would lead me to think he didn't lose too much muscle.

Also his cholesterol numbers improved, blood pressure and blood sugar dropped. But he was exercising and having a protein shake a day, plus veggies for dinner (to avoid setting a bad example for his kids).

Makes me wonder if the true story here is plain ole exercise, it does the body good!

That is what I'm getting at. Not saying he just lost muscle. lol But when you eat garbage at a calorie deficit, you will lose fat as well as muscle.

But if he's swallowing down protein shakes and veggies, then that helps, too. I know a body builder who does the same thing- he eats total garbage but watches his calorie intake and makes sure that he consumes 1 gram of protein for every pound of lean muscle.

And, hey. It works for some people. But this is why I am so against it:

We've always heard the expression 'You are what you eat' and I feel that is very true. Our bodies circulate every cell every so often. Whatever cells make up our body today will be replaced in a month from now with new cells (or however long it is- I can't remember). To make those new cells, our body uses the food we eat. So we can either have a body built on junk food that has no substance, or the same calorie count made up of fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and good vitamin supplements.

So honestly, I'm not so sure what is so revolutionary about his experiment. It has been known for decades that calorie counting is an effective strategy for weight loss. Just about everyone from casual and career dieters to professional body builders when they go through their cut/bulk phases know it's a matter of calories in vs. calories out.

But for optimal body composition, macro content to an extent is crucial.

No denying that! I've had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis for 4+ years and battle weight lose everyday. Between reading everything I can on diet/exercise and visits to my endocrinologist's dietitian I've gained a ton of knowledge. One thing I know for sure the body is an amazing machine that has to be taken care of.

Like Prune Juice? Keep in mind the debby cakes didn't make him crap his brains out, it just had a lower calorie count.

Isn't that what Chemo therapy is?

Ummm, I know that most humans are omnivorous. I've seen a lot of food being eaten by a lot of ppl. I hardly think it's more than I realize though. Because someone eats it doesnt make it safe?? It doesnt make it any less disturbing??
Cant believe you're comparing rice, a dried grain, to a Twinkie lft on the shelf for 2 years. Even so, I wouldnt eat 2 yr old rice either. It's probably filled with indian meal worms. Which most grain is and it doesnt pose a problem if u rotate food properly...or like some protein with ur rice.
I am a baker by trade. I use fresh, organic ingredients from local farms that I pick up 2-3 times a wk. I bake from scratch every single morning. There are no '2nds' or leftovers sold here ever, ever. So, I'm completely disgusted from the tips of my toes to the top of my head when I see someone opening up a petroleum based product thats manipulated into looking like a turd and call it okay to eat or feed to their children. On the other hand, it's none of my business what u stick in ur body..

I didn't read the OP or any comments but just felt like voicing my opinion. Weigh loss isn't some magical fad diet, its really basic math. Burn more calories than you eat, and you'll lose weight. Simple.

Pretty irresponsible of the guy. Obviously he has a great metabolism and I am sure he was doing some heavy-duty exercise. I worry that foolish people will see this and think that they can eat whatever crap they want and not get sick or gain weight.

I also wonder how long until this guy develops diabetes.

It's just a matter of time before his body starves from malnutrition and the onslought of diabetes. Noone can eat like that and stay in good health.

I didn't read the entire article. So he's eating veggies and a protein shake.

Are you related to this guy? You seem to have a vested interest in this story. Nobody is "hating on" this guy, just saying that this is not a good example to set. The story is different since he had a protein shake and vegetables; that does indeed change things.

I said "I wonder how long until this guy develops diabetes." I did not say he will get it instantly, but doing something stupid like this could indeed set him on his way.
