I read both the sublime and rediculous posts here. Why? Because I learned early on that sometimes you have to shovel a lot of manure to find the nugget hidden within.

agreed - to a light ATS user like myself, i mostly just check out whats on the front page, maybe a little bit more. The fact that there has been so many baseless (to a large degree, sure, they have some basis, but you know what i mean) prediction threads being highly flagged has been putting me off the site. I imagine i am not alone with this - you're scaring potential readers away from more important things!

Also, "something bad is going to happen on this date" threads are not helpful to anyone. Something more specific could be helpful - New York city is going to be attacked by godzilla on the 10th of november - but just a general "something bad is gonna happen somewhere" is just fearmongering.

mrwendal why are you so hostile? I know you never said ban the predictors I was only assuming that's what you were eluding to. I am actually an ally. I believe as you do the prediction threads are out of control they are not denying ignorance they are spreading it. but ask yourself why do you hate the prediction date threads? is it because you secretly want these dates to be made manifest? this is a conspiracy site, prediction dates are part of it. at this point I find the dates quite amusing the level of research that goes into some of them........but you sir have some anger management issues to work through........the false predictors should be punished please go back and re-read my previous post to see what I have in mind for them

It would be interesting to see a demographic of which and how many members returned after these so called predictions, if any?

Anyone got an estimate?

I would like to thank you for taking some of the heat and disagreements away from the UFO forum.
And yes that was only a joke.

It's like walking on glass around ATS lately~~ if somebody says they don't believe something...

I'm still here...

Just trying to stay away from the -

They say there are strangers who threaten us In our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous In our theaters and bookstore shelves
That those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves
Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand...

What bothers me most is that just days ago, I predicted someone might make a thread about this.

I wonder, have there been other threads like this where someone was tired of all the predictions?

Yes. We have seen these types of threads before, not just about predictions but a variety of topics.

What this indicates is an insatiable need for there to be a looming death date. For some reason, all of humanity, in one form or another, seems to relish the impending doom of nothing more than a numbers game. This is not new, neither is selling books or videos that indicate the doom to come. Cleverer are the authors, as, I'm sure, they will include a "back door" statement that allows for there to be a change in the doom setting.

I agree, and that is just fine. If that is something people wish to discuss, so be it. That is really not my issue here, I just think along with the other changes made here, is it not time to change the system of flagging threads as well? Is there not a better way to get the threads that have some real basis to them to be seen rather than the sensational headlines with unproven theories pimped out as factual upcoming events?

I do not think that can be done without censorship which I do not advocate, and I am at a loss for how to change the current system available to us here. So that leaves one solution, change the reasons why people flag a thread. In order to do that, you have to want to take some responsibility in relation to the content that does climb up the boards and make it front and center for weeks. As I have already stated numerous times now, I am guilty as well. Sometimes I check ATS from work (like now actually) and I wont have much time. I see something of interest based on the title, a quick blurb I scanned over, or a potentially good topic. With our current flagging system, behavior like mine would shoot the thread to the top, and that is all fine and good except for one thing.... I couldnt tell you what it was actually about. I had no idea to the actual content. However, simply suggesting that you judge a thread based on it's content around seems to mean you are the Censorship man who is here to hold down free discussion. Apparently even using ridiculous predictions based on a Cattle Cars, Channelers, blogs and cartoons are as taboo as taking responsibility of what you promote.

I absolutely agree. I have been a member for about 2 months now and there have been more than 5 prediction threads that are on top as if they are even close or legit! It's just plain annoying is what it is. Just like "The boy who cried wolf", except nothing ever happens. Those kind of threads don not even deserve to be in the "ABOVE TOP SECRET" website in my opinion. Might as well let people start writing threads on acid trips and explaining what they saw for 14 hours, and then pass it on as if it has any real material!!!

Although I certainly agree with you that there seems to be a lot of silly prediction threads, but I'm not sure if I like the idea of someone pleading for me to stop giving stars and flags to any thread that I might find worthy. Nor do I like the suggestion that I am an idiot for doing so, simply because you, and some other members find these threads objectionable. The reason that these types of threads receive so many stars and flags might be because there are a lot of other members on ATS that do not find them so objectionable. In the past month I have read numerous threads from members objecting to UFO/Alien posts, prediction posts and 9/11 Conspiracy posts. The main objection to all of these threads seem to be that they make "us" all look like idiots. I have read some pretty way out threads during my time as a Member of ATS, and during the several years that I have been coming here as a non member, and not once have I ever thought that any member, who starred and flagged a post that I did not believe or agreed with, was an "idiot". In my opinion your Post, and those like it, have a chilling effect on those who have every right to create a thread of prediction, no matter how silly it might seem to others. How many people have witnessed a UFO incident, but did not report it for fear of being labeled an "idiot"? You have every right to your opinion, and I applaud you because you have expressed that opinion so eloquently. The unfortunate thing about this Post, and those like it, is that expressing your opinion was not really the main objective. The main objective was, in my opinion, another attempt to quiet those voices that want to be heard, simply because they failed to meet the standards that you think are needed for ATS to be taken serious. And speaking of "being taken serious". I could have taken this post more serious had you left out the sloppy Elvis humor
And finally, congratulations on all the Stars and Flags this Post has received.

You must have missed the part where I said that if you are flagging something that is in view with your beliefs than I have no issue with that. As I have already said my issue is for not flagging the actual content. If you share the view of a particular thread, doesnt that mean you have viewed it's content?

And thanks for noticing all the flags and stars. Clearly that was my intention. I have always wanted to put myself through 11 pages of abuse for some flags and stars /sarcasm

amercia has perpetual AAA credit rating. it can be 1 trillion trillion dollars in debt and it would still be considered by investers good for it.

mainly it would be like you going to the ravenite social club and asking john gotti to pay back your loan or else.

the u.s. controls the world bank, imf and every major money lending institution in the world.

the global economy will never let the u.s. fail no matter what it does because it would mean the end of capitalism and this current economic system as we know it.

so if you want to buy gold at inflated prices go for it. but if the economy collapses everyone will start to sell gold flooding the market and driving the value down.

whole fortunes will be wiped out and no one will have enought funds to buy it.

unless you want to walk around with 3 kilos of gold dust in a pouch to do your shopping,
its a bad investment because its a commodity thats heavily hoarded and manipulated.

Hasn't the OP noticed that gold is slowly increasing everyday - now around $1410. Perhaps he hasn't heard from the Trends Research Institute that a crash of 2010 is underway by the devaluing of the dollar, and hence the extreme paranoia of a lot of people on ATS.

The same Trends company also predicted the 2008 crash as well, and one of the 2008 threads given in the OP's post was not exactly exagerrated because the global financial system was on the verge of total collapse within hours during October 2008.

So using logic rather than attempted prophecy, I would expect people to be fairly pessimistic anyway.

Why do some people like you feel threatened by predictions?... ist it because of your religion?...

Look, it is true that there are many predictions that don't come true, and some sound stupid, but you could say the same for every conspiracy theory...

For example...

Can you definetedly prove that the government was behind 911?... A lot of people would say yes but in the end all they provide is not real proof, just what they beleive is proof, but if you really think about it all of it is "make beleive" and nothing more.

What about ufos? Most of it are fakes, and people trying to grab attention, but there are some real sightings, and even some videos of real ufos, but in the end there are more fakes than the real stuff.

Every "conspiracy theory" is the same, most of them are make beleive, and even hoaxes, but there are some that are real.

In the same way a lot of predictions have not come true, but many others have, and it is not based on "luck"...

I can show you several predictions I have posted that have come to pass, and many of them were not really predicted by me, but by someone else, such as Ed Dames.

If you want people to stop posting predictions, or to stop flagging prediction threads then they should do the same for every conspiracy theory. or are you that biased that you can't stand predictions for whatever reason?...

So tell us, is it because of your religious beleive?
