How they came to be?

I was thinking alot about the stereotypical alien...

...and I wanted to discuss with you why these beings might actually look like this if they do exist.

We can tell alot about an organism by the way it has evolved. The conditions in which organisms live have a lot to do with how and why they evolve the way they do. So, we have here your stereotypical grey alien.

Short, skinny, lanky, large black almond eyes, large cranium, a slit for a mouth, virtually no nose, pale grey skin and hairless.

Sounds typical to me. What I was thinking about is how this creature may have evolved into this figure.

To me, the most defining feature of this being is the eyes. Big, black, almond-shaped eyes. Why would a creature have evolved with these eyes? I believe it would be because wherever they live it is dark. The bigger the eye, the more light it can take in. So if this creature spends it's time traveling the cosmos looking at a whole lot of black space, then it's eyes may have evolved making it able to take in much more light.

It's body is skinny, lanky, and short. If you have the technology to travel through space then chances are you don't need to do a whole lot of physical labor. This could be a reason for them being so skinny. The same goes for height. If you are that technologically advanced, than you probably don't need to reach anything or have a reason for being tall. Thus your body adapts over time to your needs. That could be what is happening here. They are short and skinny (stereotypically) because they have outgrown the need for physical labor and use technology in it's place.

It is probably the easiest to say that they have large craniums to fit large brains. I must say to evolve a brain that large must take a ton of time. They must have reached a point where technology and intelligence integrated itself into the very society of these beings. They must be pretty intelligent to travel the stars observing all sorts of other existances. The amount of knowledge they must have seems to fit their large heads. I'm sure they have tapped into other parts of conciousness that we have yet to dabble in.

To me a being like this is hairless because it has no need for hair anymore. Technology provides warmth and over time hair is no longer there. Tiny mouths could be a result of lack of verbal communication. Also they could be a result of not eating like we do. They probably take nutrient capsules and have outgrown the need for taste.

As for their skin, well it may be the darkness of space that creates their pale skin. Like creatures that live in the darkness on this planet have bleach white skin.

I'm curious to hear what you guys/gals think may be the reasons behind a creature looking this way.

I'm basing this off of a stereotypical grey alien....

Interesting thread topic. I am more interested in the planetary conditions where these beings may have originally evolved. I'm no astrobiologist, but to me the features suggest the following:

big eyes -- dark conditions, perhaps in a cave system or on a planet that is farther out from the star
hairless skin, lack of body fat -- lots of ambient warmth, perhaps from a volcanic / greenhouse atmosphere?
short, lanky, and reportedly light in mass - a planet larger than the earth with strong gravitation, forcing evolved creatures to be lighter and more efficient to walk upright on the surface.
grey skin -- evolutionary camouflage, to blend in with rocks like a lizard?
telepathy -- evolutionary survival, to escape predators who were sensitive to sound (like bats in a dark cave system)
rationality, borg-like community and lack of individual differences -- social evolution as a result of working together in a challenging, closed environment (cave systems). game theory suggests cooperation will lead to better outcomes than individualism.

Very cool. . . I could see this being done on a much larger scale. Back-engineering the creature! Genius.
It seems that you've made some great observations regarding the purposes for various aspects of evolution. Since you're so keen, and later, I promise I will see what more you have to say. . .I am wondering if you might consider the following:

Appearrance of the being, which you have.
What obstacles of said being, as you know it to be, might exist in an average Earth setting?
Things such as gravity, O2 levels, how would you percieve an alien to act or react?

Challenges to greys visiting Earth: They would probably find the light too intense, the air too thin and the temperature too cold, similar to a human walking half way up mount Everest. If their planet has stronger gravity, they might also feel a 'floaty' sensation here making movement more difficult, like our astronauts on the moon. If they wanted to move around quickly , for example to avoid detection or capture, they'd probably want to use some kind of technological assist, like a jet pack. Their legs would not be very helpful in running fast in our gravity.

We would find their planet too dark, stuffy, hot and oppressive. We'd feel like a 300 pound fatty in a sauna.

I've read of a theory that Grey's are artificial androids.

I think the idea being that large distances and time involved, radiation and hostiles (us) are not something the actual organics want to be in contact with.

So it would be the Grey's look like their masters or are creations purely built for function.

That's if they exist.

But nice set of reasoning trying to backward engineer the environment that would create such a creature so S+F for you OP!!

Probably not, unless the species is several gazillion years old. Advanced societies don't have the same evolutionary development as normal species do. Other factors play larger roles, such as culture, and as such I wouldn't expect black space to have any impact on eyes or space traveling on body style.

Again, this is probably not related to any survival related effects since there would be no selection pressure, but rather due to cultural inputs.

Lack of body fat would also mean a world rich in food supply.

low levels of oxygen could have something to do with theyre size. the small body size could use less oxygen on trips? no ears and a small mouth could mean a different way of communication maybe they use something like dolphins which might be why they would have large heads

Very good thread.

One theory that i have read is that this is not their true appearance it's some kind of space suit that protects them from the conditions of this planet or any other planet that they visit.

Another theory says that they are not from another planet, they are time travellers from our future. They look like that due to a genetic mutation caused by radiation.

The photo is from Chernobyl, there are a few similarities there don't you think?

And to lighten up a little in stargate:sg1 the Asgards(which had the typical grey appearance) are no longer capable of traditional reproduction and instead perpetuate themselves through cloning, as they have the technology to upload and store Asgard consciousnesses and transfer them to new bodies. All those centuries of cloning has caused the original DNA to deteriorate.

The grey is supposedly a biological machine, created as a kind of worker race..

Interesting to think that they could be future humans. They are strikingly similar to humans. Upright walking bipeds, 4 limbs and a head, two eyes, fingers, etc.

What i want to know is where did this depiction of aliens first arise? Was it from witness testimonies or is most of it exaggeratingly fabricated lore?

The most logical answer I have come across in regards of their look, and also about what has been claimed by abductees under hypnosis, are, that it is because they are a hybrid-species between humanoid ET's and non-humanid ET's, that looks more like giant insects, almost, or atleast their heads do.
Apparently their History-it have been explained to the abductees- goes back quite some time, though, hence some of the "whys" about their creation, is now lost.

If true, than that would explain the bug-eyes and why they are said to be sterile as they are a hybrid-species.

the 2 theories at the top of my list have already been mentioned, accounts from stories and eyewitnesses with great detail that are similar I think gives the best pieces to this puzzle

1. they are automated life forms like organic robots or drones, the accounts of people describing small nose and mouth and ears but large head and quiet small feeble bodies, also being void of emotion and most people describe lack of communication or being in a trance state around them and they all for the most part look identical --all these could be because they are space traveling drones that are giving purpose through more intelligent beings

2. they are space suits, I believe this manly because of the reasons I used above, they just seem like they were made with purpose and not actually a life form that evolved on its own (history and science tells us that if food and resources are abundant nature generally over time gets larger i.e., reptiles to dinosaurs, small mammals to mammoths and other things before last ice age) so I don't really believe advanced life forms would get weaker and smaller because they don't need to do physical things anymore

But space suits for other life forms would make more sense to me, and what really stick out to me,
a. there are accounts of people seeing the greys hanging in the ships they describe, like suits on hangers in a row, specifically the "Hill's" benny and barbera (I think is their first names, anyway) in her account she describes a grey that takes it skin off to reveal an almost indescribable gruesome entity that is much scare-yer looking

b. putting this together with the large slanted eyes and I'm thinking they could be and insect race much like a praying mantis or something, it could account for the small feeble arms and the greys eyes are too similar to insect eyes to just be coincidental

Awesome, you were able to take it further than I expected. You have a very logical and analytical thought process. . .and it's a great combination. If we apply those aspects to what we "know" to be about greys, what similarities might exist between your description, and the contact events other people have described?

I think everything about the grays points to them being bio-engineered for space travel, vs. evolved for the need, but who knows.

According to some accounts, the eyes are actually an artificial bio device for light amplification, with more normal looking eyes underneath (though much larger). This would make sense due to the darkness of space.

The slender build, lack of intense musculature, or even apparent joints is again indicative of a zero G adaptation.

Same with the fingers, four all-opposable digits, with small suction-like tips make sense in a zero G environment, where you have to retrieve and manipulate free-floating objects.

The simple digestive system is indicative of an efficient use of limited food provisioning needs. My bet is that these guys are cloned, not conceived in the traditional manner....basically like bio-robots.

i don't think they are extraterrestrial at all. they look like insects. as in from under water or under the earth.
