Being apolitical and un aware an issue?

It seems quite sad to me that thousands of kids are not aware of some of the world's biggest issues. When a flood strikes, kids are usually whining about how Justin Beiber is a girl and not a boy. When there is a massive earth quake, most kids don't know that there have been millions of people killed and are groaning and moaning about some of the most petty things. Another sad fact is that adults also have the tendency of doing this. I will give you guys a video of a questionnaire on the streets of the US about many things. Should schools start teaching kids about international issues and other similar things? What do you think?
