The first game was much better even though it wasn't very good at all

I was gonna buy this because of how good the first one was, but when I read the reviews on a couple of gaming sites I was shocked at how poor the scores were for it. The first game was short and the second is even shorter. Why do some follow up games come out just to make money of the back of the first game, what happened to making a better game than the first??
