“Brilliant Venus May Prompt 'UFO' Sightings”

Over the past few months I have noticed a lot of threads popping up because people have been confusing visible planets as being UFO’s, Niburu and similar. So I thought I would start this thread before we see a surge of new threads when Venus pops back up again.

I think people should invest in a cheap telescope or pair of binoculars and go out and take a look, it’s a wonderful sight to behold, especially when there is a moon nearby and the two dominate the night sky….of course you get a better view when the moon is tucked away, and there is little light pollution.

So remember folks, come Wednesday 3rd November, if you see a light close to the horizon during sunrise……it’s just our sister planet stretching its muscles once more.

Planetariums, observatories, weather offices and perhaps even police stations should be prepared to receive a bevy of inquiries during the next couple of weeks concerning a strange "UFO" that will soon be making appearances low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.
The unusual lateness of sunrise may add to the confusion for skywatchers, since it coincides with the sudden arrival of the bright sky apparition. But there's no need to be alarmed.
That bright light in the sky is only the planet Venus, which returns to visibility Wednesday, Nov. 3.

An astute and foresighted thread. Its a good idea to get in early with this stuff, so that people can eliminate venus from any investigations they may be attempting of thier own, and in general, this I feel was very civic minded of you woogleuk !

I think you mean 'right before SUNRISE'.

Venus will be showing herself in the morning hours, in the East, right before Sunrise. Some will think this is a 'new star' or what have you...if they are used to getting up early morning hours and looking East because Venus has not been seen in the Eastern morning sky for some time now. As she becomes again a morning star, there may be some that take notice she was not in the East as of any time recently and may make assumptions.

We are no longer seeing Venus in the west after the 'sunsets'.

Yeah, your right sorry, at work again and looking over my shoulder, trying to pass the time. Thought it would be a good thread to get going. Thanks for pointing out my mistake, I have corrected it.

great advice on getting yourself a pair of binoculars or a telescope...

Even the most basic Toys R Us telescope can teach you wonderful things with a little practice....

Its possible to see the Moons of Jupiter with your own eyes, rather than let a textbook or an internet astrology site describe them to you....

GO OUT AND SEE IT!....and be familiar with it....

great advice..

Thanks, I bet it won't stop those pesky threads popping up still though

I'll be out observing though, thats if the sky allows, been pretty cloudy these last few weeks up this way, and it the Leonids sometime this month isn't it?

I have an 8" reflector, not very good lenses, but it allows me to see some nice images, especially Jupiter. I plan on at some point getting a solar and lunar filter, plus I believe there is one to help eliminate light pollution.

You realize, of course, that this works both ways.

Now people are likely to see a Reticuloid Mothership and mistake it for the planet Venus.

Damn you Majic, no fooling you ATS mods with the disinfo I have been sent to spread!

I suppose if ET wanted to get a good look though it would be a good place to sit, no-one ever seems to bother looking through a scope these days...I suppose using your imagination makes it more fun.

Conjunctions between Venus/Mars/Jupiter/Saturn/Moon in any combination are another classic time for UFO reports. Particularly if it is in conjunction with the moon, because people are drawn to it in the sky.

In the light of recent posts asking about magnitude, i feel i should explain. A conjunction is where two or more celestial bodies appear close to each other in the sky. It is purely a line of sight effect, but often quite spectacular and an unusual sight, to those who have never seen one before.

Thanks for that post. But I am sure, most people won't listen. They'll see a youtube video with a strange light and come right here to post it. With a title like " STRANGE LIGHT IN THE SKY UFO! "

I've never understood how anyone could mistake Venus, or more recently Jupiter, for anything other than a really bright star, but I guess it happens.

It appears so, thats what prompted me to make this thread in the hopes that when other ATS'ers who may not know what it is suddendly don't come rushing here creating thread after thread with names like "UFO in morning sky, anyone else seeing this" lol.

I suppose I can't critisise, if don't know, then you don't know, but a lot of people recently having been jumping to conclusions and hopefully after seeing this they will go "ahhh, thats what it is".

I can't imagine the panic that would set in if Mars, Jupiter and venus decide to show themselves all together....think i'm gonna go check the calenders and see if that going to be the case at any point in the near future.

It happens, I like to think I know what im looking at when I look up into the sky thanks to years of doing it for fun, but even I took a while to figure out that huge bright star in the evening here in the southern hemisphere the last year or so was Venus, since I always thought Venus was a morning star so it sort of took me a back. I doubt anyone would mistake Jupiter for something like a UFO here in the Southern Hemisphere since its in the sky for hours most nights.

I think one thing people have to sort of think about is just how long their observation lasts... the more credible UFO sightings dont lasts hours or even half of hours if they did huge numbers of people would see them. There fleeting things that dont last more than a number of minutes... if you see a light and its slowly moving towards the horizon or moving slowly away from the horizon in a slight arc over the course of a hour or more... its 99% a planet in my opinion. If on the other hand its a bright light doing odd maneuvers and crossing large distances in seconds then it might be something interesting.

heh we've had both Jupiter, Venus and Mars prominently visible in the evening/night sky here in New Zealand for a while, although Mars appears like a rather small star and is hard to spot unless you know which one it is and cant be seen if the suns in anyway still up... dont think we've had any panic here

Hmmm ive just scratched my nose after handling raw chillies...
