Australians Training Afghan militia

bigpondnews.com

The Defence force has defended a decision to train Afghan militiamen on Australian soil.

Last week, six soldiers under the control of Afghan warlord Matiullah Khan visited Australia to train with some of Defence's elite soldiers, Fairfax reported on Friday.

Air Chief Marshal Houston has defended the decision at a lecture at the University of Canberra.

'(They will be) fighting side by side with our special forces when we do the next deployment,' he said.

'If we want to get our act together so that we have an absolutely seemless operation it is absolutely imperative that we tr

I can understand that maybe training these people is a good thing if they are going to fight beside us in this so called war. But when this war is over, is there a possibility that these groups unrelated to the taliban could become more powerful and then another threat to Western Forces in the future?
We are teaching them our secrets, techniques etc. How stupid could a country be to allow this, as we have seen with the taliban who were once funded by the United States

You do realize that when Afghanistan was invaded in 2001, that the first thing the Americans did was pay off warlords to ensure more support against the Taliban government, right? Then the Taliban was toppled and the warlords were free to restart the opium trade again. Now most of these warlords are factions enemy to the US puppet government installed there and have been proven to be more effective than the Taliban at times (usually because they provide jobs for locals either as farmers or mercenaries). Seems like training some of them in a Western country is a means to keep them on the Western side.

What secrets and techniques? How to shoot a handle and fire a weapon properly? Big deal. It's not that much of a secret anyway.

They are being trained as infantry. Nothing special, nothing sensitive. Cannon fodder basically.

There's nothing stupid about training up Afghans to provide security for their own country.
The sooner there is a reliable and credible Afghan military and police force that is capable of taking on the Taliban unilaterally, or at least with minimal or no western ground troops presence, the sooner western coalition troops can be brought home.
Right now there's lots of joint operations/missions. Hopefully in a couple years the Afghans wont need American, British, Canadian, and Australian soldiers by their side in combat.

This is about Afghan militias which have nothing to do with the national government. As the article states they are being trained to fight alongside special forces, so obviously this is advanced training.

And really, like the Afghan government will survive without Western help. Most of the current government is composed of warlords of the Northern Alliance, which is India's proxy against Pakistan's proxy Taliban who controls the south. The government isn't made up of friendly Afghans but rather a militant group that happens to be an enemy of the Taliban.

Our special forces are elite soldiers trained for the most difficult missions around the world. If our common soldiers were training them it would not be a big deal, but when the SAS are training these warlords etc, You are giving up secrets that they will not even tell a citizen in Australia.

All it takes is for one of these people to turn on the western countries, sort of like that joker that ran off with all that American cash a week or so ago
