I have been to a lot of Lodges, I am a Master Mason, and a Past Master, and I have never seen a pit such as this. There is an occasion in the
ceremonies to use such a pit, and I have seen one constructed outdoors and used for the ceremony and then filled back in, but I have never seen a
permanent one.
Unfortunately this is one of those "spoilers" that cannot be shared. If I were to share it, it would ruin the experience for any would-be Masons.
If you would like to know its use and meaning, join a Lodge.
I promise it is nothing nefarious, and we are not hiding all the secrets of the universe in a dark bottomless pit, and we are not conjuring evil
spirits from the depths of hell! It is probaby no more than 2 feet deep, and you do not have to leave the lights off in the Lodge.
Lodges contain no secrets, please turn the lights on while you are working, unless of course you need them off for your electrical purposes, but
surely once the work is done, you will want to turn the lights on and check your work? Take a look around, we encourage it.
