Hey gang,

It was a strange day today. The wife and I were out on errands, and as we're driving along she points out what appeared to be a flock of birds flying in some sort of blob formation. I really didn't think anything of it, other than how sloppy the formation was, it kept twisting and changing shape, then it struck me that as we were driving towards it, it was not moving in any noticeable direction, just kind of hanging out in the sky. Rather suddenly, it broke into what I can't really describe that well, but here is a (terrible) artist rendition:

That's basically what looked like, or rather enough like it to get my point across. Either way, so it looks kind of like that picture, and then it starts twisting in the wind. It really looked like a large piece of invisible paper, with all these dots drawn on it. And it's twisting more so at the bottom than at the top, and we're like "wtf?" and obviously a few other drivers had the same reaction, as the speed limit in this particular area is upwards of 70mph, and we were all doing 50 and slowing. I figured that an explanation would provide itself as we drew nearer, it was in the sky for two minutes according to the clock in my car. I had it figured as something huge blown off the back of a vehicle blowing in the wind, something rational like that...and then it just wasn't there.

Like, literally - one second this thing is eating up a portion of the sky, doing whatever the hell it was doing, and then *poof*...gone. It was high enough in the skyline that if it had fallen, it would have been visible - also, I need to stress this to no end, it was stationary in one point of the sky the entire time. It was freaky.

Has anyone else notice flock of birds acting in this manner before?

I've checked around a few websites, and most of the examples shared are your typical flocking formations. Nothing shown remotely looked like what we saw today. In honesty, it resembled the smoke monster from "Lost" enough for me to mention it.

I don't think it was a UFO or anything fun like that, as much as I wish it had been so - but I'm totally stumped as to what it was we saw today.

To note, it was also a crystal clear sky, no clouds in the area, and I don't believe we had much wind to speak of.

Any ideas?
