While I agree of course that in 1928 there was a distinct lack of communications infrastructure (or at least a lack of the sort of technological advancement we expect in this day and age) I think it might be interesting to consider the following new technology , when discussing the possibility of a time traveler being in this shot...

Quantum Teleportation. Its relatively new technology , revealed by the Chinese a few weeks back. Its capable of sending and recieving over great distance with no drop out, information sent cannot be accessed by anyone other than the intended reciepient, and it is near instant. No delay. This communication method has various possible applications, including space communication. But I wonder if the technology could be applied to cross temporal streams? Thoughts people ?

Just one thing, why is she talking into her own seimens hearing aid?

It can't be an ear trumpet for several reasons. No wires are sticking out, and there is no appearance of it covering the ear to the back or the head. If you look at an ear trumpet you will see that if you put the part that inserts into the ear canal into the ear, a portion will extend past the back of the ear. Also an open end will be see from the front.

So it's back to square one. Whatever she is talking into is flat, can be held completely in the hand, and have the fingers bend around it evenly, and it fits between the edge of the mouth and the front of the ear. I still say that it is a communication device. Maybe not a "phone" but something to communicate on with others like herself.

I think if we apply occam's razor to this and look at it again, we at least would get a sensible theory that debunks the time traveler one.

If you consider the relationship between men and women as they get older, then it could be that the old man who crosses first is this woman's husband. He is walking fast to get away from her griping. She comes behind holding a notebook or something (suggested by someone already thank you) cupped around and next to her ear to hear if the old man says something related to her griping. Just a theory folks.

Now I'm not saying it's not a time traveler. I personally believe that we are, have been and will be, visited by "time travelers". I just believe they come from neighboring realities and not from our personal future or past. This way it is possible for our timeline to be altered by visitors with advanced tech, affecting our future.

If they come from our time line there would be too much risk of paradox. If they come from another separate time line and reality, they can affect ours without the risk of paradox.

Not sure if anyone has caught this yet but it made the MSM. It is on CNN today.

Forgive for not reading all 70 pages and it has probably been mentioned already.
But who would she be talking to? Surely another that could receive the signal. And no cell towers in Chaplin's day, so how would anything be transmitted?
Although, in the end, I don't think it was a cell phone anyway.
