No basestations, no uplinks, no satellites, no network - mobile phones aren't walkie talkies you know.

If one can send a person through time...

..why not a phone signal?

Did you read past the OP? Not reading a thread before commenting is pretty lame. Go back and count how many people have posted the same argument about cell towers, then think about reading threads before commenting on them.

Sorry to pick on you bud, you are most certainly not the only one. It was your 'why am I even commenting' remark that got to me. Why indeed? WIthout having read through the thread you could well be reiterating something that's already been addressed. Oh wait - that's exactly what just happened.

And ps - the argument is moot; time travelers would not be limited by our standards in communications technologies... if they can travel in time, they can probably manage to stay in touch with Ground Control...

And who made you the thread police? You've only been here a couple of months and you are already dictating what people write in a thread? The cell tower argument that posters keep bringing up is a valid one not lame as you keep calling it. Your counter-argument that we don't know what tech awaits us is even more lame. How the hell do you know whats gonna happen in the future?

You're guessing like the rest of us are, so shut up.

There is no time traveling, just motion, we move.
You can't go back in time, everything is on play for infinity.
Rewinding are just past memories, just your mind thinking of the past..
If you wallk backwards it means it's time travel ?

It's only us and the road ahead, some chose to walk in circles "time travel and some chose to go forward.
I would say in stead of carry on is carry off, go forward but be carefull. The very notiong of this word. "be full of care with what you do, if you run too fast in anger then you are left dry.

This galaxy is spining everything is spining but there is always something new.

Some people just don;t understand, there is nothing to fix, we can only better our self as we go in front but with great care or else everything will colapse.

Just got the heater thing from this post:

I think it's more likely that she is an undercover Control agent and was filmed using her shoe phone.

She's definitely talking, but because of the clothing that she wears we can see it is the cooler time of the year. I'd say she is holding a small black purse to her ear to keep the cold away from her ear, and at the same time she is talking to the man in front of her.
well if she was talking to the man in front he wasn't paying attention!
He maybe wasn't interesting in what she was selling!
If that's a woman, she's darn scary.

See my quote above about the cell towers and why they wouldnt be needed. And this isnt a cut scene or anything from the actual movie. They were filming the premier of the movie. This person wasnt an actor in the movie. It was a passerby....

I think you haven't thought of the simplest explanation and the first thing I thought when I watched it. It just looks like the lady knew there was a film crew filming and she was ashamed to be caught on tape so she tried to hide her face by covering it with her hand. Yes she might have been holding some object but that doesn't mean it was a cellphone.

You can even notice how at the end she kinda stops and looks at the direction of the camera and she kinda smiles at it and even scratches her forehead.

Replace "lady" by "transvestite" and I think you have a convincing explanation. An old lady would not, in my opinion, want to hide her face unless she had just walked out of a bank that she had robbed
But most transvestites would balk at being filmed, especially when - like "her" - they don't look like a woman but more like a man in drag. His "talking" was most likely the utterance of some swear words for being filmed by the camera that he had just spotted in front of the theater. The greatest fear a transvestite has when dressed in public is of being noticed as such and then ridiculed.

After looking at this interesting Cell Phone/Time Traveller idea, with fascination today, concerning the Charlie Chaplin film ‘The Circus.’ Not much really happened on that particular day in 1928, but I looked at a few interesting happenings around that particular time. They may be of no significance, but interesting to say the least. I just love research, looking outside the box, and always open minded.

The Circus's Los Angeles opening occurred at Grauman's Chinese Theatre (a short walk from Chaplin Studios) on January 26, 1928….

On the day of the premiere of the Circus opening, there was a 3D test footage, operated by Roland Totheroh, Chaplin’s chief cameraman.

On the 30th January, 1928, 4 days after the premiere of the Circus, there was the first radio telephone connection between the Netherlands and the United States.

8 years later, just for your information

The first mention or use of the term Radiotelephone was in a 1936 article by Popular Science, in which it was stated Pocket Radiotelephones like this may soon make it easy for anyone to call up his home from the street.

There may be confusion between the similar words radiophone and radiotelephone. A historic case of radiotelephone being used for two-way radio was not found. However, since the 1930s the Federal Communications Commission has issued various commercial "radiotelephone operator" licenses and permits to qualified applicants. These allow them to install, service, and maintain voice-only radio transmitter systems for use on ships and aircraft. A radiotelephone is a communications device that allows two or more people to talk using radio. However, there is controversy about the definition of the term. There are also conflicts between British English usage, American English usage, and historic use.

Not that much there, but been interesting…..you’ll never know what you might come up with and trigger something off with someone else on the planet.

This is good footage but is it possible she or he is scratching their face and then at the end she/he is like 'damn, these cameramen'.... i dunno

I didnt really see any lip movement until the end of the footage.

This may have been mentioned, but this woman looks to be middle-age or older and could she possibly be employing a hearing aid?

I did a quick search for 1920's era hearing aids. Nothing much came up...

Wireless Communication was inveted in the early 19th Century so it is possible that science-fiction of that time foresaw these devices. Some science-fiction fan playing a prank is an unlikely explanation, but its a possibility that can be added to that long list posted earlier.

That might be why they look so bulky in the film, because they are covering up the walkie talkie. for what reason, I dont know.

Yes andy.

It is true. Tell me this though, does everybody you see outside at the moment wear jeans and a t shirt?
There is still some people that dress like that. So no, not completely inplausable.

vVv

I was generalising but in response to your point here I would be more surprised to see someone dressed like that in the age of mobile phones, then to see someone talking on a mobile in the early 1900's.

I'd say for someone in 1990 or beyond to be wearing those clothes, then slipping in to a time slip and ending smack bang in the middle of a film is impossible, and if its not then its about as close as it gets... highly implausable it most definately is.

I'm inclinded to believe this was added in later on for the following reason:

* They look at the camera... they do this to be noticed... they dont look up and go "oh # i'm being filmed!" they kind of smile a little bit and are clearly aware of the camera's presence.

What ever the truth its a fascinating piece of footage and even if its fake as I believe... its bloody good!

My first post

I have been looking at the film with interest as I admit the lady does appear to be holding a mobile phone.

My explanation
It’s a sunny day the lady is shading her left eye from the sun, look at the angle of the shadows, she cannot do the shading with her fingers unbent due to the brim of her hat!!!! At the end of the clip, when she turns to the camera she unfolds her fingers a little when she does this I am not so sure that she has anything in her hand at all.

Can I explain her talk to herself, no I can’t, but I get some of really good replies when I talk to myself, she is not the most handsome of women but then I am no oil painting myself.

Bear the brim of her hat in mind and look at her hand when she turns towards the camera.

Just makes no sence, first to send a man dressed like a lady ( big hands and shoes ) or a n old lady with a cell phone? how important can the call be, walk and talk in 1928 with a cell phone, not very important right?. I wonder what explanation we would have found 20 years back when it wasnt so comun to have a cell phone. I was surprised that the guy in the video asked 100 people and couldnt find an explanaition, was it the vaccine or is it just that most of the people are geting very stupid. Im sure there is a simple explanation, so simple its not even important to talk about.

well i think it could be she/he was walking down the street and seen the camera pointing her way and put her hand up to cover her face (and she/he prob had something in her hand at the time ?) so she/he wasent noticed on film and becouse she wasnt happy about being seen on film she was cursing to herself, think about it !!!!!!!!!

or shes got an ear ace and moveing her mouth up and down to try relive some of the presure have a think about that to.

If it was a time traveler would they not have used a blue tooth device ?

Also , to simply have a cell phone in that time would not have been enough , there would need to be some big cell phone towers to relay the signal .

I whish I could tell what way the wind was blowing , perhaps the person was shielding there face from a cold wind ?

And let's remember people , old folks like to complain well they walk in the cold , that would explain the moving lips.

Or it could simply be the person shielding there face from the camera , camera shy , we see that even to this day
