certainly possible - maybe Charlie had a bet with the camera crew - "you win the bet if you spot me" - and they spotted him.

he would have held up perhaps a leather notebook (which explains the orientation of the fingers at 4:11) while singing/humming silly songs to himself.

got called out by the camera crew - they spotted him, they won the bet - explains why the "lady" stops and turns and says something.

definitely possible - Chaplin was after all a major league clown and prankster!

To attempt to get this thread back on track...I'm just going to list the things I think are possibilities in order of what I think is their plausibility. Duplicate numbers indicate a "tie" in plausibility.

1. Lady is using the cupping technique while singing. It is really the only one that explains both the hand position and the movement of the mouth. (Yes boon...I put your (and others) idea first)

2. Lady is using some sort of hearing aid. Early electronic or small ear horn. Why is she talking??? I don't know. That is why it is second in the list.

2. Lady is fixing her hair. Again...no explaination for the talking. Tied for second.

2. Lady is blocking the sun from her eyes/face. No reason to talk while doing this unless she is saying "ARG...stupid sun"

2. Lady is listening to a music box and singing...this is at a 2 because I don't think music boxes were that small back then...but maybe they were. If so...this could be bumped up to a 1.

3. Lady knows they are filming and doesn't want to be on film, so is hiding her face while ranting about the movie cameras.

3. Lady has a toothache and is holding an icepack to her jaw.

3. Lady was hit by rocks from kids and is holding her jaw while cussing out the kids.

4. Lady is an "extra" and taking direction from the director...this is low on the list because this wasn't an actual movie shoot, but was of the premeir. Still doesn't mean that they didn't stage some people to walk by.

5. Lady is just a crazy lady pretending to talk on a phone. They did have phones back then...so not out of the question she is crazy and pretending to talk on a phone.

5. Charlie himself dressed in drag as a "prank" for the documentary of the premier. His hand could be up by his face to try to disguis himself.

5. Same idea as the above, except it is a random person pulling the prank. They had to have pranks back then...right?

6. This lady is using some type of early experimental walkie talkie/shortwave radio...maybe she was friends with Tesla.

7. This is a time traveler who is not talking on a cell phone...but is pretending to talk on a cell phone knowing he is being filmed to drop an "easter egg" for future generations to argue about on a conspiracy website.

8. This lady is a time traveler. And she is using some type of handheld communication device that is larger than modern day cell phones

9. "Lady" is actually a reptillian alien on a scouting mission

Are we not missing the most obvious way to debunk this? Maybe it has already been mentioned but cell phones need towers or satellites to transmit. So if this person is talking on a cell phone did they bring satellites with them too and this means there are at least two time travelers. I am willing to entertain the notion but explain how cell phones could be used without a network infrastructure. Also based on the size of the cell phone the time traveler must have been from around our present time, as before 2000 cell phones were bulky.

Just saw this thread and found it interesting.

Was it mentioned in this thread that the Movie "Night at the Museum 2" has Ben Stiller going back in time through a picture and leaving his cell phone behind?

Funny coincidence is that the person in the movie who found the phone was named Joey Motorola.

Also interesting coincidence that Motorola started in communications in 1928, the year this footage was taken.

Well after watching the video I have to say that it does indeed look like someone talking into a device of some sort. Obviosuly it can not be a mobile phone as they did not have the god awful towers everywhere back then. So the only expanations are as follows:

Crazy extra who was talking to themselves while holding something to the side of their head

or

There was a time traveller using a device to communicate with other travellers or calling home

or

Humanoid alien using a communication device

The obvious one has to be the first one, until ones considers that back then they did not just use any idiot as an extra. Also films were not a common thing that they made regardless of the quality. This being said one has to assume that it was deliberate as they would have closed off the street or made this (more likely) in a studio!

So what possible reason would you have someone talking to themselves while having their hand to their head? This part makes no sense!

I for one can not decide which option, all I can do is say "DAMN"!

Great thread and alot of really good explanations.I like the music box because they did make rather small mechanical music boxes back.Making watches was an art and had tiny gears and springs.But I had one other thought perhaps it was something like a star trek episode where they came down to a planet in disguise.

lol come on the thread is titled, time traveler caught on 1928 charlie caplin film? so that theory has been proposed from the start, people are being asked to pinpoint what we are seeing, i have seen many theories, some more likely than others but almost all could be possible.

if something is possible but sounds weird, should it be thrown out for being weird if it is a possible answer? untill somebody can look at the film more in depth with expert abilities at doing so, then all there is, is speculation.

speculation leads to many theories.

the first thing that really needs to be done is confirming if she is holding a object, then that will rule out some theories, etc etc, untill what remains is most likely.

if it is possible that she is a time traveler or what ever else, then it is still possible regardless of how kooky people think it is.

time traveller is holding a time machine , that also doubles as a time communication device, teleporter, quantum computer and possibly a phaser gun. all in one device. which explains the size.
