37°14'42.08"N 115°48'59.30"W

By typing these above coordinates into Google Earth, are these fighter jets here at Groom Lake?
Are these like "chasers" or "escorts" of some sorts incase an "intruding" aircraft (intentional or non-intentional) comes close to the base?

thanks.

Even if that was the real Area 51 or a place where they do secret stuff, do you think they would give out that information? Google Earth does not display what the surface of the Earth really looks like, or looked like when the satelite took the photos. It is heavily censored. If you don't believe this, try and put in some coordiantes that you know exist in Iraq. You will be taken to a different place.

Ok, but do you think these are fighter jets?
You may have to zoom in closer to view them.
There are 2 them parked there that look like fighters to me.

Hi Darpa,

Yes that is Area 51 and yes they are fighters to chase off uninvited guests.

Unfortunately the Google images are quite old as much development has been undertaken over the last couple of years - the large hanger has been completed, the new strange revolving tower erected and the taxiways changed.

I'm sure gariac and the experts who frequent the area (not Area) have more up to date information.

Peace!

I could not possibly fathom why a government facility of this sort would have any kind of jets/rockets etc. located in or near it! Especially since this place that does not even exist!

/sarcasm off

Who knows what they are but if you go back in time with google earth those things have been sitting at the same exact spot since November 13 2006.

All this assuming that google earth has been behaving or not.

Those are F-16s. They are frequently seen parked on the North Ramp at the National Classified Test Facility (Area 51). Sometimes there are also Navy F-18s. They are usually used for chase (and sometimes air combat maneuver evaluations) with various foreign aircraft tested at Groom Lake by the Red Hats squadron in a joint USAF/Navy program. Sometimes the F-16s have been used for classified test projects such as HAVE GLASS (F-16 radar cross-section reduction ) and HAVE WINE (F-16 technology program).

The base will do proficiency flights (based on radio traffic) in the daytime, so you can occasionally see these planes fly. Given the number of plane spotters that are obsessive-compulsive, it would cause a ruckus if some rather standard F-16 showed up at a white world base after it has been MIA for months. So they do the routine training at Groom Lake.

You can also catch the foreign aircraft under test in the daylight. They flew the Sukoi SU-27 east of the base, essentially free territory. They probably want to make it known what they are studying to make the bad guys flying the foreign aircraft ansty. The same goes for all those SU-27 decoys out by KINS.

The secret stuff is flown at night. :-(

The Have Glib Site-4 facility south of the TTR is run day and night. Generally I've been able to identify the planes they fly in the daylight. Night time is hopeless. Even with night vision, there is the issue of magnification. As you magnify the image (needed to ID something over site-4 due to distance from free territory), the light is reduced. It may be possible with modern NV to see aircraft at night, but not with surplus military NV.
