Hello all,

I thought his might be of some interest to you.

On the 19th of October, 2 Russian Tu-95MS Bears where intercepted above the North Sea by 2 F16's after being followed by British and Danish aircraft's.

Apparently these Bears are known for being very noisy...

I doubt that those are the sounds reffered to in the OP but that was a really interesting article. Thank you, do you have any more info on this story?

Old times revived today. Two Russian Tu-95MS Bear aircraft were spotted over the North Sea, where two F-16s went off at the airbase Leeuwarden. The Bears had previously been followed by Danish and British jets. Eventually the bear went home and turned the rest over the North Sea again. Because the Bears make a pokkeherrie. Besides the four Kuznetsov noisy turbine engines of 14,795 horsepower each, making the adjustable counter rotating propellers, a lot of noise. So many, that NATO pilots intercepting the bears sometimes hear. Like the American B52, a contemporary, the Tu-95 Bear (Tu-142 and derivatives) have not yet retired, and about sixty from the Russians remain in operational use as a muli-role bomber (Tu-plus sixteen 142 for their Naval Aviation).

We heard this noise 2.00pm yesterday in Yorkshire England. It was reported on the local bbc news television as many people have called in about this.

It's a strange thing and seems to come after lots of UFO sightings and preceeds heavy chembombing in the daytime as far as I can tell so it may not be a totally natural phenomena. It sounds like rumbling thunder but indeed it does have a mechanical element. We also get a lot of Xperimental and Russian craft (illegally) in the county so they might be avenues of investigation. Were it not a phenomenon that is apparently quite old and global.

I think I've found it! It happened to me again this past Sunday. The dog detected it first and started howling in pain, then came the sound which didn't last for very long maybe 30 seconds this time. Since then I've been "sick in my head" Not a headache but like my brain is turned to vibrate and it won't stop. It hurts and feels like my head is detached from me. I've been completely nauseated all day, I've had to lay down. It has not gone away.

You said it is coming from the sky. Could it be the refraction of sound?

When successive layers of air have different temperatures, the ability of sound to travel faster in warm air than in cold air causes bending of sound. This bending of sound is called refraction.

On a warm day, the air near the ground is warmer than the air above and so the speed of sound waves near the ground is higher. This causes the bending of the sound away from the ground. On a cold day or at night, the reverse happens and the sound waves bend towards the earth. Thus on a cold day sounds can be heard over longer distances.

Sounds can be heard at abnormally long distances over water on quiet days. This happens because air next to water is cooler than air above and, therefore, sound waves bend towards the water and can travel long distances

When sound refracts, it bends through the sky and comes back down to the earth somewhere else on the ground. This could explain how a noise could sound like it is coming from the sky when it really isn't.

And I thought I wouldn't ever need that science of sound class I took

I know Exactly what you are talking about. I have been hearing this noise every so often as well as last night in the early hours between 2 and 4 am. I live just off a moderately busy road in Adelaide, South Australia, which doesn't have much traffic in those hours. I have tried to think of a logical reason for this sound like a truck passing or a low level jet. But it just cannot possibly be any of these things as i havn't seen such. The way you described the sound is exactly how i hear it. like gears on a truck multiplied by a thousand or 14 freight trains. It is very loud! and comes and goes in a passing fashion but only lasts around 10 seconds. After hearing it again last night i am now determined to try and figure this out and am going to try and record it.
ive also considered the way noise travels, especally at those early hours and it just isn't logical. It sounds like it comes from the sky. (And also worth noting that i leave near a major air base)

Hello this is my second time posting in ATS. My first time I was jumping into someones thread about seeing moving stars that zig zag in all directions....Any who.... I read this thread when it was first posted and started to think to myself "Damn I want to hear this for myself" But yesterday night there was a rain storm....No lightning or Thunder at all just rain.....and I heard this noise like something was hovering in the sky...and the noise it made...It literally sounded as if something was above sitting there..It was going on for a long time too. I remember earlier in this post they said it sounds like gears moving....To me it didn't really sound like gears that we are used to hearing....but it could of past for gears with a Hydrolic System.......I asked my wife if she heard the noise ...Instantly she said I was crazy but a few seconds later she heard it too. It did sound kinda like that video (minus the static noise) but much more clear and there were some loud Booms too maybe 2-3 of them and they didn't sound like thunder at all....It's more like if something exploded like a firework. Now let me tell you my location of where I live. I live on top of a hill where I can for see 30% my town and behind my house I can see onto Revere Beach from a distance. Planes usually go around my directions certain times of the day but you can hardly hear them sometimes and planes don't make a sound like I heard last night. The sound lasted too long. I also live 3-4 miles away from GE Aviation. This is where they test Plane engines and out of my 3 years living where I am today I only heard the testing once and that was April in 2008. I know this wasn't the sound because I could hear the testing from the distance where it was coming from and it lasted for 24 Hours shaking my bedroom wall that was facing in that direction. So none of these could be what I experienced before and this is all new to me.....I was more interested in it last night because of this post i read... The noise went on for a long time ...Stopped for a minute and it proceeded to make more noise. I don't know what IT is but I'm going to be listening more often now.

This is for the OP: How far are you from the wind farms? (I know there's a couple just south of Rockford off of I-39.) Under certain weather conditions (like low level wind shear) the turbines can start making different kind of noises. Other conditions (but less likely) such as overspeed can also cause cavitation that supposedly sounds like a helicopter.

YouTube seems to have a couple vids of the first kind, and perhaps just one of the second. But I haven't found any where the audio is sufficiently clear enough to be worth linking to. (Too much wind noise in the mic or audio isn't that great to begin with.) Yet you may want to search "wind turbine noise" there and see if any sound comparable.

I know during certain quiet periods at night, I can hear trains from 15 to 20 mi away. If for some reason a wind farm is making noise under similar conditions, I wouldn't be too surprised if the sound carries from that as well.

Despite such problems, I'm still pro-wind power. It's one of the cleanest energy resources we've got. I'm just mentioning that it may be a more-everyday and mundane cause of the sound than other theories.

Strange, the places I used to snowmobile upstate NY, there were wind turbines everywhere. We went right up them all the time to take breaks, if it made any noise at all, it was so low it couldn't be heard over our idling engines.

I am not sure how far if any wind farms exist around here but I will check up on it...

I already made a post in this thread and the other about the Taos Hum. It's a candidate but I'm not sure if what I heard was the same thing. In the hum was a pulsing sound. Whoosh whoosh whoosh type of pulsing. Let me know if you find more info!

Awesome! Seriously life is learning, and we all have different lessons to learn from each-other.

If we're not trying to understand or learn about the world then what's the point in living other than reproduction?

Knowledge is power. Therefore knowledge should be shared.

Okay, while I have not read every page, I think I can deduce a solid theory...or at least not as crazy as some, no offense.

1.) Doctor Who is experecing trouble with his Tardis. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
2.) This is a natural phenomina that crops up every now and then and we just like to blow things out of porportion, like the humans we are.
3.) Reverse-engineered man-made UFO, which is possible. Men seem to like their cars being the loudest. XD
4.) UFOs come to save us from our prison. (It's another conspiciry theory on here, about us being stuck in a machine and asleep.
5.) And finally, the Gods really are P/Oed, like someone said earlier.

Personally, I'm thinking it's 2 or 3. Could be something else entirely though, after all, there's a lot of crazy things in our universe, and beyond it. As always when approaching things like this we must Deny Ignorance.
