Since its discovery a quarter of a century ago, the Mandelbrot Set has become a universal icon for the doctrine of chaos--the emerging scientific idea that simple processes can result in infinite complexity. It's the set of all complex numbers z for which sequence defined by the iteration z(0) = z, z(n+1) = z(n)*z(n) + z, n=0,1,2, ... remains bounded.

This means that there is a number B such that the absolute value of all iterates z(n) never gets larger than B. A bounded sequence may or not have a limit. For example, if z=0 then z(n) = 0 for all n, so that the limit of the (1) is zero. On the other hand, if z=i ( i being the imaginary unit), then the sequence oscillates between i and i-1, so remains bounded but it does not converge to a limit.

I don't believe in God but I'm very interested in her. -Arthur C. Clarke

ok, you guys are in for a treat

I finally did it. Joined youtube.

Here is my first video...

This took me several hours as I am rusty with movie maker.

I will do better, give me a few days.

Enjoy!

Thank you so much! Now I know at least one person has looked and liked :-)

So many people have been influenced by Mandelbrot. So much amazing art.

This is the saddest kind of news - the loss of a unique thinker that really changed the way we view our world around us. His work, and what followed from it, really changed my perceptions about what science and math could be when I was in high school. I remember wandering around Baltimore on a class trip, stumbling into a little bookstore that looked too cool to pass up, and finding a pristine hardback copy of "The Fractal Geometry of Nature" for a whopping $10. Amazing stuff.

...what a wonderful legacy he left behind...

...berkley gal - you're good... i tried messing with a fractal program a few years ago but lack the skills to do anything noteworthy... was fun to try though... thx for posting all the vids - really enjoyed them...

Thank you Wyn

Actually if I can do this stuff anyone can.

Working on another fractal movie now.
