Most interesting info. Never knew that the ships used in the nuke testing were returned to that military base in San Francisco, always assumed they were sunk after they were tested at sea (detonation area of bomb). Duh, me...hand slap to forehead.

There is actually no such thing as the Office of Coroner in San Francisco County. Autopsies are done there under the direction of the Office of the Medical Examiner. Even if there were such a person as the coroner there, he (or she)would most certainly NOT be qualified to diagnose cancer. In the parts of California that do still use coroners, they are a part of the Sheriff's Office and are lay persons with no medical degree needed. A ME, on the other hand must be certified as a forensic pathologist.
An example is Riverside County where the sheriff is the coroner. He has been a deputy sheriff for 35 years, has no degree in any medical field and whose education was in business management.
Take a look at www.sfgsa.org...
So the statement in the thread title is a priori false.

I live in the Bay Area. It's an open secret that Hunter's Point is so toxic that anyone living near it has a lowered life expectancy. (Not literally, but cancer rates are statistically significantly higher among the community there.) Years ago I remember looking for and finding official NAVY investigations into the matter, which concluded that contamination was directly linked to cancer risk in the area, and recommended cleanup efforts.
As far as I know, nothing has ever really been done. They did apparently fill in the area where the contamination was at its worst, but just with soil, like a landfill. Then they began building housing developments there, I believe.

Finally, a good use for the space program; sending all our toxic waste into the sun. Ah, but I;m dreaming.
