Charlie the smoking chimp dies

Any chance you remember Charlie the smoking chimp? He got his 15 minutes of fame some time ago... Like in this segment:

I've smoked for years now and of course the poor chimp didn't just die because of smoking but some years ago I saw a documentary with another smoking chimp (one of those urban, savy Hollywood types) and that ape coughed horribly! Some months ago I have begun to cough in pretty much the same way... Guess I'll have to quit or end up like Charlie.

There's great PR for the anti-smoking crusaders in this story for sure.

hell, the guy (chimp) was 52 years old....

RIP 'Charlie'... even if he was South African

so is this just a heads up...
or is there a 'smoking agenda' in the unsaid meme?

Since people with this kind of agenda usually don't care for facts I'll bet anything that poor old Charlie will become the prominent face of some future anti-smoking campaign.

.... Hitler even insisted on enforcing a new anti-smoking law for public transportation as lat as 1945, when the whole country was in shambles and there was barely any functioning public transportation available at all. Then agian, Stalin smoked like a Chimney. So was Mao Tse Tsung. Then again, I think Pol Pot was a rabid anti-smoker too, kind of funny considering the Pot part of the name.

25% longer than a chimp in captivity?

Is there any reliable information on the life expactancy of wild vs. domesticated/caged chimps? I couldn't find any.

All I learned is that Charlie died at exactly the expected median life age of chimpanzees in general - 52 years.

This is what happens when you or an animal smokes. Poor and unfortunate souls who would prefer to choke their lungs with smoke then exercise.
