Two Indonesian maids have fallen to their deaths from high-rise apartments in Singapore in separate incidents over the past week, Indonesia's embassy says.

The deaths bring to 100 the number of Indonesian women who have died after plunging from high-rise apartments in Singapore since December 1999, while either hanging out laundry or washing windows or committing suicide, embassy officials said on Friday.

100 maids plunging to their death. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? And that is exactly what the Singapore government did: build a school for prospective foreign maids (are there any other type in Singapore) can learn to hang out laundry and wash windows from a high-rise apartment balcony.

Actually, 'prospective maids' never reach Singapore.
As prospective maids, they are first contracted in other countries.
By the time they arrive in Singapore they are no longer 'prospective'.

The Reuters article says the school is being built by Indonesia, not Singapore:

Alarmed by rise in number of deaths, Indonesia is building a US$1.2-million school on the nearby island of Batam for its domestic workers before allowing them to work in Singapore homes.

In classrooms resembling a typical Singapore apartment, young women will hang laundry from bamboo poles stretching from make-believe high-rise windows or learn how to bathe babies. They will take tests on at least 600 English words.

It would be better for all concerned if they just put up massive safety nets:
in Singapore, maids aren't the only objects falling out of all those lofty windows...
