Franklin asserted that "the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this Truth--that God governs in the Affairs of Men."

Washington's Prayer
The draft of the circular letter is in the hand of a secretary, although the signature is Washington's. Some have called this concluding paragraph "Washington's Prayer." In it, he asked God to: "dispose us all, to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristicks of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation."

Throughout his administration Jefferson permitted church services in executive branch buildings. The Gospel was also preached in the Supreme Court chambers.

That's a good point and one that should be made often on these topics, there are plenty democrats that are Christian, more then likely the majority are Christian.

really not much to add in this thread

is it worth rehashing everything that's been said.....

for those people who think that this country doesn"t have a deep history with the belief in the divine are denying our real history

your free to sit there and dismiss it for the simple fact they gave you the right to do so

with religion comes all morality and ethics of course within accepted tolerance when i look back at this nations history.........when the majority of people who believe in the divine this nation grew it prospered and it succeeded like no other as if the hand of god was guiding us all back then,

and now when i look at the state of this culture and the state of the union i have seen that man has turned his back on the divine it has turned its back on all morality and ethics and the end result that this country is dying and it is dying at a rapid rate...........

i'm not here to say one way other or the other how a group of people see this country that's for you and you alone to decide and who and what you want to believe in.... that is the legacy that we have been left with
and its a legacy that we all should at least respect..you don't have to believe but what you don't have the right to is to tell other people what they should be believing in......

75% see themselves as christian does that make this a christian nation well the way i see it as i see myself as an american who owes his existence to those people who had that belief in the divine so i honor what they gave us and i honor what someone else wants to believe........for myself i think thats what they would have wanted and what the divine aka god wants............ no matter if you don't believe in him as his creation im pretty sure he believes in you and us all..............

by the way folks if you think i'm a bible thumper i'm not i haven't been in a church or picked up a bible in over 25 years...
i'm not trying to tell anyone how to live their lives and who they should worship........and if they should worship..like i said im just a man an american man living in the united states of america the best country in the world as far as i'm concerned.....and i give thanks ever single day that i was born here and given the rights by him and thankful that those men who came before me had their beliefs in god and gave us all the protection to do as we all see fit within regards to religion................

my 2 cents

Why do people hate Christianity?

So because we respect seperation of church and state in government, we hate Christianity? Jumping the gun are you? I am a christian so because I believe in this that must make me hate myself? This is a common type of argument from some members on this forum.

Most of the people in this country are some form of Christian or another. Why is it that Christianity is the only religion that's ok to try to marginalize or rail against?

Who said it was ok? And why should Christianity be the only one marginalized her? Muslims have been treated like hell in their own country for the actions of afew corrupted individuals, jews have not had it easy here as well, they were heavily discrimminated from jobs in the first half of the 20th century. Christianity is not the only religion being marginalized.

How about 99% of the country being anti gun? Does that mean we should ban guns in the nation? 99% of people who oppose Woman being allowed to work or serve the country? How about 99% of people against blacks or hispanics having any rights? Should the trump human freedom? Because that is the argument you are trying to make here. This mentality is exactly why the constitution is in place.

I only saw one response against christianity over its bloody history, yet your response was not to that particular poster. Anti christian reponses? How many anti-christian responses were there before you decided to post?

I looked back at some of the comments and whoa.

I "hate Christians" because I believe this Nation and it's Constitution were not meant to be or to create the U.S. as a "Christian" nation?

We're "God haters" for that? I don't believe in your God so how could I hate "Him"?

What I hate is this insisting that we should be declared as a Christian Nation in the first place. So our COnstitution was written by believers...so what. Christianity was the common religion of New World people coming from england and Europe...of course they were.

And it's debatable what they felt and what quotes are attributed to them over time. If you look at older archives of what Jefferson said about his 'religion' there are conflicting ideas between him being somewhere between a Deist, a supporter of Christianity, and downright AGNOSTIC.

Ben Franklin too...

And even if they said certain things in their personal lives, it's a moot point because the Constitution is a legal document that ITSELF states "NO LAW SHALL" with respect to Religion or Religious entities.
The Constitution was signed off on, ratified by, and declared int history by the full agreement of the Federalists and Anti Federalists.

Now where in it does it state that Christianity is the official religion of the U.S....nowhere. We are not obligated to serve a Christian "God" or follow Christian teachings. The case is closed and has been for nearly 300 years.

I swear, if the Founders knew that in 2010 people would once again decry Theocracy and return to the law of British Rule and Religion...they would surely be worried.

If I have any hate for Christians it is because they call me and my family bad names and discriminate against us because we are not Christians. Then I see things like firemen letting people's houses burn and their pets die because they didn't pay 75.00 for fire services, but oh, yeah, we are a Christian nation. WORDS. WORDS-WORDS-WORDS!

I don't have any problem at all with Christ.

Thomas Jefferson took all the miracles out of the Bible, you know. See: Jeffersonian Bible.

Poor Richard's Almanac that Ben Franklin made famous, that was the top seller in colonial times right as the Revolution started- look one up sometime. Some of the 1770+ ones are online. They are filled with astrology.

The people that were signed were elected to come and represent. lol What the truth is, is that you about HAVE to be Christian in this country to get elected. lol

Don't include folks like Thomas Paine-lol, he didn't SIGN, ohhhhhh....but I promise you that he and other firebrands had their say in getting the powder keg lit. Read what he thought about religion sometime. lol

Ron Paul is the only active politician on the right that I can understand. All though I disagree with him on most if not all of his fiscal issues I believe he is someone who truly believes what he means. If the TEA party was original made to get him elected it is far far far from that now. Tea Party is just the new name for the fringe right.

I respect Ron Paul and wish more republicans and conservatives would look up to him instead of the; Palins, O`Donnels, Becks, Limbaughs etc.

The OP asserted that the fact that only 75% of Americans consider themselves to be Christian is proof the quoted "Tea Partiers" are wrong in their labeling of America a "Christian Nation".

I merely pointed out that the percentage of adherents being less than 100% is not proof of anything. Equally, the 75% figure does not make the "Tea Partiers" assertion true.

The number of adherents, like your argument to me, is irrelevant.

Yeah, it does. What's your point?
Actually it happened last week, when a neighbor decided his kids couldn't play with ours because we MUST be devil worshippers, because we have Tiki torches.

I kid you not. We are the Dangerous Tiki Torch Sect.

WTH
I'm just in the deep South. Everyone should experience being openly NOT Christian in the deep South at least for a while.

Your neighbor is INSANE!!

I am in the Deep South as well, and Tiki torches with Citronella are a necessity here!! I don't know anybody without a Tiki Torch?

I have about 10 surrounding my pool and deck. It looks like a Hawaiian Luau most weekend nights! On top of that I have a Pit Bull, a bunch of friends of several Nationalities and Races that drive large 4x4s and Harleys! On top of that, we like to sing Karaoke or Play Music on the deck, the women are gorgeous, and sometimes the Swimsuits don't last past a few beers! Your neighbors would really, really hate us! My neighbors were a little hesitant at first, but now they bring steaks and beer and join the festivities!

Did I mention that several of us are Masons? Most of us are also Christians.

I wonder how your neighbors would respond to a bunch of loud Harleys, giant trucks, loud music, and an occasional nude body visible over the privacy fence as they execute a cannonball from the diving board?
They would probably really, really hate it when they saw me in church on Sunday, or found out that the guests are police officers, High School teachers, counselors at the college, and senior management state workers!!
