This photo was taken by my friend, above Wellington, New Zealand a couple of months ago.
It didn't appear in either the previous or following frames, and nothing was visible with the naked eye.

I am keen to get some opinions on this. Its unedited and has not been tampered with.

If someone could embed as I am not sure how to.

Remrem.....

Thank you for your interesting photo

The EXIF data says a flash was used.

And it does have the shape of a bird.....

Here is the complete photo embedded for you as requested:

I would think it more moth-like.

With an exposure time of 1/8 second the flash brightly illuminates the bug but the portion of the exposure after the flash has fired shows the now dimly light moth as a faint dark, and erratic streak as it flies to the right.

I didn't select italics. Why am I italicized?

We need to look a little closer at Maybe... Maybe not, as it all starts after he's posted...

He's a god or something.. Possibly a roman god... being they Italics and all...

What say you MMN? Are you a benevolent yet hysterical overlord thrusting your nefarious intent to dominate the forums via Italics onto us weary travellers?

Phage.....

We are all italicised.....stop complaining.

Now.....back to business.....

It appears you will persist in showing me the errors of my ways. As it so happens, you are fortunate on 2 counts:

1. I really enjoy being wrong

2. Depthoffield would agree with you if he was here, as follows:

but i find very unusual the dark track following the object

i know the phenomenon.

i think the bright object with dark trail is just a bug, flying very close to the lens.

The image is taken at evening, in low light situation. The flash fired, like ussually automatic settings do in this situation. The duration of the flash is very short, maybe 1/500 sec. So, it shows a very overexposed freezed thing, because is close to the camera and the flash light is strong. The total exposure time of the shot is ussually much longer than the duration of the flash, about 1/30 sec, more than 15 times long, and during the exposure time, the flash was finished already "long ago", so, only the surrounding natural light is captured, or the bug moving here (motion blurry involved)

Below is an older experiment exposing a button suspended on a string, having a pendulum motion.

First photo, using flash, like ussually cameras are doing with automatic settings:

or direct link: files.abovetopsecret.com...

relevant EXIF data:

Model - Canon PowerShot S2 IS
ShutterSpeedValue - 1/30 seconds
ApertureValue - F 4.51
Flash - Flash fired, compulsory flash mode, red-eye reduction mode

of course, we shoud ignore the string.

the second photo, taken without flash, and with the button not moving, to understand what it is really there:

or the link: files.abovetopsecret.com...

EXIF:
ExposureTime - 1/100 seconds
FNumber - 3.20
Flash - Flash not fired, compulsory flash mode

As many times, technical facts fooling us.

So tonight that is:

Phage 2 (kite & moth)

Maybe...maybe not 0 (lanterns & bird).

Kind regards
Maybe...maybe not

Looks like a bird, so probably not.
Looks like a moth, so probably not.
There have been a lot of ufos with strange light projections.
Given the ship can generate luminous atmospheric effects
it might be outfitted with projection cloaking.
They have the time and the money.

Thanks for embedding.
Reading the responses it does seem like a moth or insect in front of the camera.
Still pretty cool photo.

My first impression when I saw it was maybe something from another plane/dimension temporarily crossed over : )
Maybe next time.
