Caterpillar to install factory in China: company

news.yahoo.com

Caterpillar, the world's largest manufacturer of construction equipment, will build a factory in China to produce mini hydraulic excavators, the company said in a statement.

Caterpillar already has a factory in Xuzhou, which is also near Shanghai.

The company, which is headquartered in Peoria, Illinois, had sales and revenue of 32.4 billion dollars in 2009.

Company that Obama said would rehire American workers if stimulus passed plans to open new factory -- in China...
Now, I'd like to know, when did they start to rehire Americans
to work in their factories here in America after that Nice Big Stimulus Check From The American Tax Payers?

Any ATSer's back to work at the Caterpillar plants in America?
Did Caterpillar build any new plants in America to Hire American Workers, with our Tax Payer Dollars.

From what I understand, Caterpillar is building a plant in Victoria, Texas, that will employ more than 500 workers.
OK, 500 workers, is that a lot? Ok, Ok, Yes 500 workers is better than No Workers.
But this is what really made me start this thread, It is part of a long-term plan for investments in China that will make Caterpillar one of the leading manufacturers of construction equipment in the country.
I would have liked it much better if that was America instead of China's name in the article.
I believe that our tax dollars should not have gone to any company that will build in another country because of cheaper work force cost.
How about just offering an American a living wage for both he and his wife or partner to work, with out a Union involved.
Just my thoughts.

You could look at the Bright Side, Like my wife said ( she's Chinese, born and raised ) You'll have more work than you can shake a rice cooker at

It'll be stamped: Made in China.
So, I'm sure it'll break down 24 hours after the warranty expires. But the other problem you might have is,, Their ands are so much smaller than ours,,, You may find it hard to get into those tight nut and bolt areas to do the repairs.
I agree metrics's suck.

What i get mad at is when you go to buy parts for stuff made in China, the repair kits cost 2/3 or more the price of the item. Take for instance 2 ton hydraulic jacks...you can pick one up for less than 50 bucks, but the seal kit cost 65 dollars or more! WTF! They want you to throw it away and buy another one, no fixing anything anymore!

I saw this a few days ago on drudge. Surprised not posted until now.

Bitch about labor costs, that's fair. Material cost will be much lower in China also. Profit margin will be much higher.

See how easy it was for President Obama to lie to us. How's that hope and change workin' out for ya!

hinky, just you and Optix have replied, I posted this thread the 29 of Sept.
Optix as made some good points, It does not pay to repair, it is cheaper to replace.
That makes no real sense to me, But then again it's made in China, not expected to last, is that it?

That Hopey, Changey Sh$t Sucks for most Americans, I didn't vote for the A$$ Hole and those who did are regretting it now, will at least most are, you have some asking for their Obama Money.
I have not heard of anybody going back to work under Obamas Economic plan, have you?

The only thing Caterpillar looks after is itself. This isn't the first time they've taken public money and run away from promises made.

September 1986. Caterpillar & the British Government announce a £62 million investment programme in the factory just outside Glasgow, Scotland where the D6 tractor was manufactured.

January 1987. After receiving the taxpayer funds, Caterpillar shut the factory down, leaving 22% of the local community unemployed. The workers then hijacked the factory, refused to leave, my Father helped construct a D6 Tractor which they left in its pink paint undercoat, they put it on display at George Square in Glasgow, it was the symbol of the strike. One night Sheriff Officers served a legal notice on him which forbad him to re-enter the factory under pain of arrest.

I remember at the time the trade union writing to the Senator & Congressman local to Caterpillar's US headquarters and receiving replies which basically said "it's nothing to do with us" and "you can't buck the market".

I'm sorry to learn that Caterpillars business practices haven't improved during the intervening period.

Of course they are!
Why do anything in the USA when you can make 10x profits in China? [facepalm]
I think out of all things that ire me, this is number 1.
[outsourcing]

The only thing American businessmen look out for is themselves.
The reason we are in this big mess with jobs, unemployment and shoveling away our tax dollars is because of money.

It doesn't get any simpler than that.
Face it, if it wasn't for a company wanting to make outrageous profits in the first place, we'd all have jobs.
BUT NO! CEO's have to make as much money as possible! Screw the American workers!
I am not for regulations, I am for honest people doing the right thing.
But these people are not honest.
They don't want to see Americans do good for themselves.
If they honestly did, you wouldn't have ANY American companies across seas.
They would stay here where the people mean the most.
Not the money.

This isn't just for Caterpillar either.
ALL American companies are taking this position.
WE no longer have jobs, or a proud workforce, because our Employers only care about profits.
When are the profits going to be enough?
Where is the cut-off? (there is none) When everyone is out of work?
Then how are we going to buy anything?

Well, when the only thing you worry about, as an owner, is money, you can forget about them being self-less.
They are just trying to line their pockets with cheap labor and cheap parts.
Every company is doing it. Whether you admit it or not.

If we would just stay in this country and make things the right way, with quality parts, we would be better off.
We don't need "Globalization", we need a Unity! WE need our workforce back!

Oh. I forgot. We were sold down the river decades ago.
Yeah. This will never happen. It's beyond too late.

I could see companies building plants in other countries, to serve the needs of those other companies...
ya know like those machines caterpiller makes in china are sold in china, the ones made here are sold here...ect...
that makes sense to me...
but that isn't what is being done....
They should relocate all the upper management for this plant from their main headquarters to china to run the plant....let them live with the smog, and polluted waters, and let the have to look those underpaid chinese workers in the face on a daily basis!!! let's see if their conscious can be made bigger than their thirst for money!

Here's the thing.
China builds everything they need by themselves. For their country.
They have manufacturing plants for every kind of work imaginable.
Just like we used to.

The only reason US companies go there is another way to make huge profits.
Simple.

I read this last week and the first thing I thought was that this should complete the Obama administrations fall from grace. The American people were duped two years ago and they continue to be duped today with Obama feeding the public that his stimulus package saved the nation from hitting 16% unemployment and saving 2.5 million jobs. Something that would've happened if Republicans stayed in control of Washington.

What gets me is that people will continue to say that America went down the drain with 8 years of Republican control of Washington. The "left" feed the uneducated this and they eat it up. Congress has been in the Democrat majority for the past 4 years and in that time America has more than doubled it's unemployment and tripled it's debt.

Unfortunately, the United States deserves to be in the position she's is. Not for punishment but for a lesson to be learned. Hard lessons make for better learning.
