A group of Iraqi computer enthusiasts are advocating the use of the operating system Linux to rebuild their country. The Iraqi Linux User Group has now been up and running for a little more than a year.

The Iraqi Linux User Group website lists more than 200 members, most of whom are Iraqi expatriates. They are united in their belief that open-source software like Linux could help their nation.

It appears that Iraq has become a new OS battleground. I wonder if Iraq can become a large enough market to dent Microsoft's dominance?

Yay for ILUG...bringing the world of Open Source to an entire nation. Linux truly is the way to rebuild tehre natino. Why spend thousands of dollars, or wtvr they use for currency, on Microsoftware when you can get great Free Alternatives.

Your points are the precisely why the Iraqi user group is promoting Linux. I guess the question is not if, but rather when will Microsoft react (if it hasn't already) to this and begin to impose their operating system on the new Iraq?

Will it be an overt effort?

Linux may be a great idea to rebuild there nation....but they still gotta decide which Distro to use....that alone could tear the nation down again

The likelyhood of a linux uprising in Iraq isint going to even dent the hold Micro$oft has on the industry. Server wise Linux is already growing by leaps and bounds, but in the Desktop market Windows is still king, and will remain so for quite some time probably. As for MS reacting to the trends toward linux lately, just check out their recent 'Facts' that Microsoft has been spraying around about Linux; a good portion of which are utter bs.

I find it...ironic...that Microsoft is fighting against Linux and saying all this stuff about it. When there own servers are running Linux...Little Billy Gates has some explaining to do.....
