From start, Bush team focused on war with Iraq: documents

www.rawstory.com

Former president George W. Bush's advisers focused on toppling Saddam Hussein's regime as soon as he took office and discussed how to justify a war in Iraq shortly after invading Afghanistan in 2001, official documents showed Wednesday.

A few hours after the September 11 attacks in 2001, then defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld spoke of attacking Iraq as well as Osama bin Laden, according to notes of a meeting on that day, newly declassified papers show.

It appears that these are the documents in question:

Talking points for the Rumsfeld-Franks meeting on November 27, 2001, released through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), confirm that policy makers were already looking for ways to justify invading Iraq – as indicated by Rumsfeld’s first point, “Focus on WMD.”

This document shows that Pentagon policy makers cited early U.S. experience in Afghanistan to justify planning for Iraq’s post-invasion governance in order to achieve their strategic objectives: “Unlike in Afghanistan, important to have ideas in advance about who would rule afterwards.”

Rumsfeld’s notes were prepared in close consultation with senior DOD officials Paul Wolfowitz and Douglas Feith. Among other insights, the materials posted today by the National Security Archive shed light on the intense focus on Iraq by high-level Bush administration officials long before the attacks of 9/11, and Washington’s confidence in perception management as a successful strategy for overcoming public and allied resistance to its plans.

Yeah, read that in bold again.

LONG BEFORE 9/11

And there is no conspiracy here? :shk:

Yes the hell there IS!

If this is true, then yes its REALLY REALLY Suspect, I'd Like to see these memos, before I jump to conclusions, If an American President is looking for a war, then he should considered bombing himself.

You should know it's true. We knew it at the time. Remember the "Downing Street Memo"? It was just at the time no one dared stand up to Bush and his criminals. If you did they would start a campaign against you using everything they could. Remember Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson? Remember the Dixie Chicks? Hell the right is still doing it. "Why do you hate America...You are aiding the terrorists if you question the war...You don't support the soldiers". You had to be blind not to have known this all along.

Its as if they had this whole war in the middle east planned out ahead of time

But really, if this news surprises anyone then they've had their head in the clouds this past decade.

Heres a little more proof of the neocons agenda:

And this quote from Rumsfeld sums it up pretty well

If Saddam's regime were ousted, we would have a much-improved position in the region and elsewhere

If this is true...

Did you read this?

Having been around here a very long time, and doing many stories similar to this at ATS and elsewhere, I can assure you that this is true. These are documents DECLASSIFIED and released by the National Security Archive. I don't see how anyone can question them.

Sure it's true. Also, if you go looking for something and you pay generously for it, you can expect that somebody will oblige.

Certainly the presidency of GWB will go down in history as the worst ever. All of today's problems can be tied directly to it.

I believe that the majority of the US voting population felt that attacking Iraq was on Bush's agenda, thus he lost the popular vote. It now becomes more suspicious that he ended up winning the electoral college. Coincidence or conspiracy?
