I think China is in a holding pattern here, there wanting to see what’s going to happen at home, before they begin to spread out. But when they do Japan and the Koreas will be the first to fall.

yeah they've been trying to absorb vietnam for the past few thousand years but they keep getting their behind handed to them so they gave up.

I was just reading a 2007 TIME magazine article. I'll post it below. It seems China's present aggressiveness in their potential expansion of influence has been anticipated. Again here is the article from 2007 Very interesting read here are some snippets.

Taking Off With the Japanese Navy

Japan is a stealth military power, with an annual budget of around $42 billion — the sixth largest in the world. Despite all that money, Japan's armed forces have traditionally kept a very low profile, at home and abroad. But that's begun changing. Over the past few years, Japanese forces have taken part in operations in Iraq and the Indian Ocean....

But now, he adds, Japan is waking up to its own military power...

There's a reason for the move — Iwakuni is within striking distance of every potential hot spot in Northeast Asia, from Beijing to Pyongyang to Taipei. As he gives a group of foreign journalists a briefing on Iwakuni, Satoru Shoji, an MSDF captain with the blunt build and cauliflower ears of a rugby player, points toward the area west of Japan on a map and says, "This is the area we have to watch out for." There isn't any doubt which countries he's referring to: North Korea and China...

China is flexing its muscles again, and they have been doing so a lot lately. The West has created a juggernaut in East Asia with all the investments and backroom deals which have been taking place with great expediency for last 30 or so years. It all began when President Richard Nixon and his minions formally recognized the legitimacy of the country in 1972. From there the flood gates would open in the form of diplomatic relations, trade agreements, and foreign investments in the Peoples Republic of China. They have become a formidable force, and with the US/West paying for it. With the monies they have made off the West it has given them greater influence and the funds necessary for militarization which is taking place right now.

China has become Capitalism's "Frankenstein." Here we have a country that was akin to a third world nation during the reign of Mao, becoming on of the most financially astute nations in world in a mere thirty years time. As the people have been exposed to the fare of the west like mobile phones, cars, advanced electronics, and other perks of capitalism which at one time where considered luxuries by Chinese standards; the leadership is working with a fervor to dominate the Pacific and Asia that has remained unseen since Japan's military expansion and Germany's militarization in Second World War, or the industrialization that took place in the Soviet Union under the reign of Josef Stalin.

There is only one party in China and that is CCP. Deep down in every party member there is a man wearing a gray suit akin to the days of Mao. Although today, they put on the facade of a more warm and cuddly demeanor with their thousand dollar suits. The fact remains, they are still totalitarian in nature and will brutally crush dissent wherever it presents itself. A leopard never changes its spots. In the case of this recent flap between Japan and China? Perhaps, we may see Japan amending their Constitution in the future as a response to an increase in Chinese nationalism and military expansion? China is not as warm and cuddly as we would like to believe.

Yes isn’t that a surprise the 6th Largest military budget in the world, We all know what happened after the end of WWII, Germany was divided, and West Germany grew to be immensely powerful, while East Germany Faltered. I think in Asia the Government had the same Idea Make the Japanese Strong again, so they could be a buffer to the Chinese.

That's exactly what was behind Japans rise right after WWII. The US/West wanted a strong democratic Government in the region as a counter weight during the cold war [Korean War] against Red China and the USSR. However in the 70s and 80s Japan grew way beyond everybody's wildest imagination.

There is definitely a case to be made for treating China as the next USSR.

I'd say parts of central asia and siberia will become de facto chinese in the next 30 years.

Japanese officials detained the captain and his crew three weeks ago after his ship collided with two Japanese patrol boats. The collision took place in Japanese waters near uninhabited islands that Tokyo and Beijing both claim.

Soon China and Japan will see a rainbow together and smile and wish they will be friends forever. Then they will sing happy songs. I know because I have forseen it.

sorry if this is off topic but has there been any other news on those 10k chinese troops that are in pakistan? i think chinas flexing there muscles to the east as they know they have stronger oppistion from the west(mainly india)and think they have better odds going twords japan and the koreas and vietnam(good luck with that one china they will fight for every inch of there land like they did against the usa and we all know how that ended)

Thread Update

Well the rhetoric is being ramped up a notch or two. It's obviously not a dispute over the ships seizure and Captain which is being legally held and more and more about territorial waters.

China's Wen threatens new action in Japan boat row

BEIJING — China's premier threatened "further actions" if Japan fails immediately to release a trawler captain, as Beijing staged its highest-level intervention yet in a bitter row between Asia's biggest powers.

Japan in turn called for talks to resolve the feud, but rejected China's territorial claim to disputed islets near where the Chinese skipper was apprehended by Japanese coast guard crews two weeks ago.

Good find. ...But I think your analysis leaves something to be desired...

Historically, nations tend to strut and posture when their citizens are imprisoned in another country - usually they threaten to put trade on the table.

Lately though, the global financial crisis triggered international efforts to get a grip and cooperate - the reference to "nationalism" is a straight dig at those negotiations, which go well beyond traditional commodities trade.

This 'event' is extremely important in the larger context, and highlights the East's and other nations' distrust of Western-style capitalism (Japan being a proponent of Western capitalism, China not).

Japan said China had already suspected for drilling equipment transported to the dispute between Japan and China there is interest in the East China Sea gas fields, once the drilling starts, the Japanese government may consider taking the test in the surrounding waters exploitation countermeasures, both in the East China Sea issue The opposition could intensify.

Kinda like what's happening in the Arctic with Canada.
