Authorities Search for Missing Members of 'Cult-Like' Sect

www.foxnews.com

PALMDALE, Calif. – Friends of the woman described as the leader of a break-off religious sect that has been reported missing say Reyna Marisol Chicas was devout but hardly fanatic in her beliefs.

Former neighbor Ricardo Giron tells The Los Angeles Times that Chicas became increasingly religious after she separated from her husband four years ago.

But Giron's wife, Jisela, says the church she attended was a typical Christian congregation and Chicas did not have a leadership role.

Does this have something to do with the recent rapture claims from that preachers website/book? I think it's pretty disturbing seeing as they claim that children are involved. How many more times are people going to be led astray due to religious fanatics. I wish their were some way to put into effect some kind of laws to prevent such instances. To me this is just another example of the power of religion and it's often perversion over people.

if you are stupid enough to be brainwashed by a cult, or even to join a cult in the first place, then maybe you deserve what you get. we don't exactly have a survival of the fittest type of world anymore, but i guess natural selection will still always find a way AKA stupid people doing stupid things

it is only a matter of time before one of the "breakaway cults" starts bombing places in the US. Zealoutry breads hostility and anger.

That thought crossed my mind also. Just look how much damage happened from that gas leak last week. Now imagine some group of nuts deciding a way to make something like that happen, I can't imagine it being to hard to do seeing as those pipes run everywhere in the us.

I wonder where this one is going? I am sure they will eventually find them, hopefully some will break off and save the kids from the kool aid ritual. If the adults kill themselves off, who really cares, they need to lay off on the kids as they do not know how to decide for themselves. Its bad enough kids get carried off to pervert CPS, and know the cult space flight, this is really sick. If those freaks are still alive they need some serious jail time.

Probably not... he's reset his proclamation to say that the Rapture will happen on 10 October this year. 2010rapture.org... To be followed, no doubt, by the prediction that it will be on 10 November.

You want to legislate what people are allowed to believe? And what would that be? Whose standards are going to set what is an acceptable faith and what is not?

People fall into cults, both religious and secular, when their lives are lacking, not because they are stupid or irresponsible. If you look at the Heaven's Gate crowd, they were not dumb people, they were just vulnerable to the teachings of a delusional person.

Well I was thinking along the lines of if the people were found like in this case that they should be charged with the very least child endangerment. Perhaps need a long trip to the psyche ward? As it seemed that they had the intent on "leaving this world" which I could only put 2+2 together that involved some kind of suicide. To that I think to lean twords caution when involving children? Perhaps I am just an over worried parent myself.

OK when did I say teaching children religion is child abuse? I have five kids no we don't go to church, but they know who GOD is. What I have been saying in this thread is that when your beliefs in religion start to trump common sense there is something wrong. Yes I think these cults are dangerous and a little creepy to be honest. If thats your thing mamabeth then thats your thing. If GOD comes back for me and mine I really don't think it's going to matter where we are or what we are doing at that moment in time. These people had it all planed out and I can only imagine what could have happened if the police didn't show up when they did.
