China halts ministerial-level exchanges with Japan

BEIJING — State broadcaster CCTV says China has suspended ministerial-level exchanges with Japan over the detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain arrested after a collision near disputed islands.

CCTV said Sunday that China also has suspended talks on aviation issues between the two sides. It said the number of Chinese tourists visiting Japan has plunged because of the dispute.

Beijing made the announcements after a Japanese court approved a 10-day extension of the captain's detention.

I've been monitoring this developing story for a while now. It seems to be heating up. I have a feeling this is going beyond the "Disputed Islands" China and Japan have been rivals for quite a few centuries. One can believe the rivalry goes farther back before WWII.

Are we seeing the beginnings of a Sea resource dispute over the limited diminishing ocean resources in the region between two regional giants?

I have a feeling that in the future we will see wars not just fought over oil like the present mess we have in the gulf but over water, food and land.

Interesting news slayer, thanks for staying on top of stuff as usual.

I like your comments toward the end, and I agree that wars over ALL resources will be the future if we can not collectively get our stuff together as a species. Particularly conflict over WATER and FOOD. I hear the term "peak oil" used a lot, but the REAL danger is quickly becoming "peak water." Ground water and aquifers are drying up, abundant sources of fresh water are being polluted to the point they are unrecoverable and the ever-growing population worldwide is going to put a serious strain on our ability to provide enough drinking water and basic food staples to the people who inhabit this planet. If we want to survive we are going to have to learn to drop territorial disputes from our everyday lives. Take money from the ever-growing military-industrial complex and invest it into desalinization technologies.

People love to jump on the conspiracy, NWO, whatever global entity floats your boat wagon. What most fail to realize is that its not always about control, but about securing resources that our governments know are quickly dissipating. Upper-echelon government and military officials have known for decades about the impending resource shortage, and much of the international community remains ignorant to the fact that within 30 years we will either learn to adapt and change, or face never-ending global conflict and depression.

Bringing up the subject of [Fresh Water] I think the next flap between Israel and it's neighbors will be over fresh water involving Syria, Lebanon and possibly even Jordon etc.

Tokyo said Beijing had helped restrain protests over the arrest of a Chinese captain for ramming his trawler against Japanese patrol boats near a disputed island chain after rallies were staged in Beijing and other Chinese cities on the weekend marking the highly sensitive anniversary of Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931, to voice anger over the arrest which has sparked a major diplomatic row.

I have always felt that whenever the West meets the East in a dispute there is always a level of posturing that seems awkward to me. Since we rarely see true resolutions I cannot help but think that we are so very different culturally that we are just building walls instead of bridges.

Now with two Asian Countries facing off I suddenly feel that the internal strife is more personal and has a greater degree of "expectations of respect", which could cause an escalation of tension.

This is more than about a Captain with bad boating skills, if that were the case China would let Japan conduct themselves without interfering. He likely "rammed" into them rather than "ran" into them.

I'd be hard-pressed to disagree. From Africa, through the Middle-East and quickly spreading in all directions; we find water drying up at alarming rates. Talk about a short amount of time to reverse socio-relational direction. All the successful propaganda and ignorance from all sides in that region are going to come to a head over resources if they don't do so out of pure hatred beforehand.

get to know this term my friends, as its importance is going to quite literally sky rocket in the coming years.

But ya very interesting story, this is a one to keep an eye on, I was actually just watching IP MAN just yesterday, a chinese movie with Donnie Yen and Japan invades.

This is pretty ridiculous however, it's almost as crazy as when there was a huge brouhaha when Iranian speedboats were bothering U.S. warships.
Seems similar where Japan seems to be picking for a fight.
