So, as the temps were lower than the melting point, hot corrosion was the mechanism that eroded the steel. The only liquid phase was a slag-like material that only formed at the surface of the metal.

No they haven't. Guesses, theories, and computer calculations isn't an investigation. Further, NIST even states at the beginning of their report that their findings can't be taken as factual. It's a conspiracy theory any way you look at it.

That "angry mob of conspiracy theorists" includes many of our hero first responders, hundreds of victims' families, and survivors of the attacks. That "angry mob of conspiracy theorists" also includes many scientists, engineers, architects, and respected Ph.D's from around the world.

So, the next time you wanna call a group of people an "angry mob of conspiracy theorists", you should actually look at who's in that "angry mob".

But just because they said it melted doesn't mean it melted. They meant it on a astrophysics level and if you study this on the quantum level you will realize how they did not mean melting by melting they meant it melted. Geeze bsbray. Get with the new age.
