Heres a law in Mass.

authorized agents or employees may, after 30 days notice by registered or certified mail and without the necessity of any judicial orders or other legal proceedings, enter upon any lands, waters and premises, not including buildings, in the commonwealth,

law.onecle.com...

If you wanted to mess with them...Ask where they would like to survey...and then move a small shed to that location
The law doesn't permit them to enter "buildings".

ha, that'd be great if that'd work, but we all know the gov't is in corporations pockets...

That would be a waste of a shed.

If the easement laws are similar to what we have in Canada, anything built on the easment can, and will be, removed when access to easement is required. And they usually remove in the name of efficiency and speed vs protecting your property.

Although, if the laws are similar, you can force them to enter and exit via easement only...which, if you are lucky, won't make laying pipe very easy with the truck parked waaaaaaayyyyy over there...lol.

Best bet is as stated previously, they WILL get access, so get something out of it rather than fight it.

As the Op already stated this is not "Easement". In NYC, from my research, Natural gas is a hot commodity.

The Natural gas companies if sponsored by the state can Survey your property, drill test pits etc...after 30 days notice...easement or no easement...makes no difference.

Now to be fair..if they find anything and want to create a well or access the Natural Gas, they must pay you for it to some degree and there are various royalty plans etc. But to "test" they can do that according to the law...Buildings, however, are off limits.
