TA-ATTACKS: Explosion in Algiers Damages Electrical Plant, page 1

Major electrical distribution plant severly damaged by explosion. A burned out car leads locals to believe it was a car bomb. The cause of the blast is yet to be determined, however please note that Algiers has been plagued by a local Islamic terrorist group.

A local resident, who asked not to be identified, said: "It's pretty clear this was a car bomb. Just look at that burned out car."

Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni said a technical investigation would determine the cause of the blast, which occurred a day after Algeria said its forces had killed the leader of its top militant group, which is linked to al Qaeda.

"We can't say exactly what provoked this incident but the essential organs (of the plant) were not touched," he told reporters on a visit to the scene.

The Algerian official news agency APS quoted Zerhouni as saying the blast, near the Sofitel hotel in central Algiers, might have had an accidental cause.

Algerian anti-terrorist officials were at the scene, along with fire-fighters. A fire that followed the blast, which occurred at about 10 p.m. (8.00 p.m. British time), was quickly extinguished.
