These are some of the most popular charities around. They are also some of the most crooked organizations in the U.S.

In 2008, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), which on the surface seems like a very legitamate charity with a very good cause, raised $41,000,000. To many of you this may seem to be a good thing but when you look at their tax forms from 2008 you will find out that MADD paid out $21,000,000 in salaries. That year MADD only donated $500,000 to help out communities. MADD also had millions of dollars in expenses in 2008. Why this charity upsets me the most out of the three is because in 2008 the U.S. government, really the taxpayers, gave MADD $9,000,000 dollars in grant monies.

This $9,000,000 could have been used to fund many police forces that are in serious need of financial help due to the current state of out economy.

The Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation has some of the same issues. Here is a copy of their 990 tax form from 2008

Why are the laws governing charities so lenient? There should be a law making so the charities have to at least give 75% of the donations they receive. Right now these three charities are giving under 33% of the donations they receive. MADD is giving less than 5% of the donations they receive.

I personally feel that charity in itself, is nothing but a colossal scam. I would rather help out someone physically than donate money to an organization, which in turn would pay someone a salary and donate only a small fraction.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) started out having a great cause, which was to try to bring awareness of the consequences of driving drunk. Now MADD has completely switched causes it seems and now they seem to want to bring back prohibition. (MADD) doesn't think that anyone should drink alcohol at any time.

I don't condone drunk driving, but I do feel that responsible adults should be able to enjoy a drink when they choose to do so.

Many of you know about Terry Shiavo, so I won't go into too much detail, but it seems that her brother has set up a foundation that is just as shady as the rest of the charities listed above in this thread. Here is the link to the Foundations 990 tax forms from 2008.
