Link to story

(snippet from story) Indonesia has issued a red alert after the Sinabung volcano on the island of Sumatra erupted, spewing smoke and ash 1,500 metres into the air and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.

This volcano has not erupted in about 400 years apparently, and only started showing signs of activity in the last two days. Amazing how these things can blow up so quickly, this time causing the evacuation of 12,000 people.

It'll be interesting to see if this is a "relief" to all the rumblings in the area recently, or a precursor to even more activity.

Wow, well atleast they had time to evacuate the area...

Now only silly scientists with cameras will be at risk..

Are large volcanos going off more often than normal as of late?

the one in Iceland, now this, if yellowstone or vesuvius starts rumbling, I may have to stop by the 2012 thread...you know...just to hedge my bets.

The Eyja eruption, Icelandic, you refer to was a VEI 4 and that volcano is considered a small one, not a large volcano. A VEI 4 for Eyja can be considered a moderate to big eruption for that volcano but remains a small eruption likewise.

On the other hand, when you see the impact the Eyja eruption had on Western Europe you can wonder what's going to happen when the big Icelandic volcanos are going to blow. ;-)
