'McCarthyism' Rises in Israel

JERUSALEM, Aug 26, 2010 (IPS) - Rightwing Israeli groups financially supported by Jewish and fundamentalist Christian groups from abroad are on a campaign to undermine free thought in Israeli universities. Collaterally, a move is under way by right-wing parties in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, to limit the freedom of action of civil and human rights-minded NGOs.

Those who are aware of Israeli politics know how powerful the right wing groups/ lobbies are and how much influence these groups holds on Israeli government. This time the issue rears it's head again with the right wing groups/ lobbies trying to silence not only left wing groups within parliament but also Universities, student groups and even human right NGO's.

The first target was Tel Aviv University with the country's largest student body.

An organisation called the Institute for Zionist Strategies is demanding that the TA University president survey the reading material proposed by a number of sociology lecturers with a view to balancing them with other lecturers who hold stridently opposing views.

Now pay special attention to the Institute for Zionist Strategies. So who is funding and supporting this Institute to suppress voices within Israel? Upon researching I came to a startling find.

This funding and the support was coming from a "non profit" think-tank called "Hudson Institute".

Newly uncovered documentation reveals that The Hudson Institute, an influential and activist neoconservative think-tank, has provided nearly $500,000 to the Institute for Zionist Strategies (IZS), an Israeli NGO at the forefront of an ongoing campaign to purge Israeli Universities of faculty and programs deemed “left-wing.” The grants represent more than half of the IZS’s total reported multi-year funding and position Hudson as the organization’s largest donor.

In addition, the documents indicate that Hudson provided $600,000 to The Atlantic Forum of Israel, an opaque, security-oriented, organization founded by the Israeli National Security Adviser, Uzi Arad, and run by him until last year.

This "think tank" is based in Washington and is actually a closely knit group of neo-conservative policy groups/ institutes whose main aim is to champion aggressive Israel centric US foreign police.

Not only that the Hudson Institute also played an active role in shaping the Bush administration’s Middle East policies which led us to two disastrous wars.

You have to wonder why a US based think tank is funding silencing moderate views on a foreign soil?

Why is this significant? It may not be, but there are any number of important reasons why this information should be fully in the public domain and subject to further scrutiny.

Consider this one, for example:

* The question of whether Israel should attack Iran and whether the US should support such a move is very tangibly on the (publicly perceived, at least) policy agenda of both governments.
* Numerous Hudson Institute scholars, past and present, have taken very hawkish positions on this question (see this very recent article for one example.)
* The Hudson Institute recently provided an opaque, security-oriented, NGO founded by Uzi Arad and, until last year, run by him, with over half a million dollars of funding.
* The Hudson Institute is a central component of an active and ideological neoconservative opposition to the foreign and security policy of the current US President; Uzi Arad serves as National Security Adviser to the current Israeli Prime Minister.

Who will benefit from this, will it be United States or Israel? So far it seems this institute with backing of other neo-conservative groups is funding and backing silencing of NGO's, Universities, student groups and left wing groups to advance war on Iran for the benefit of Israel.

So let me get this straight...one receives a tax deduction for giving to this registered charity, which means that income taxes are diverted to ultra-orthodox groups in Israel, instead. That kinda equates to further US tax-payer support for these little adventures. It really never ends, does it?

Good posts and information. I suppose there is a little schadenfreude in seeing Israeli intellectuals suffer at the hands of the same kind of Zionist thought police who wield far too much power and influence in the U.S. and elsewhere.

You ask, Who will benefit from this, will it be United States or Israel?

Nothing the Hudson Institute says, does or proposes is ever of any benefit to the United States - if by United States we mean the vast majority of ordinary citizens who simply live there. And in this case, crushing free expression in Israel can hardly be considred beneficial to ordinary Israelis.

All endeavors of these so-called think tanks and foundations are at the behest of transnational corporations and the wealthy elite.

They are propagandists, hired liars for a class of transnational criminals and gangsters, solely interested in further concentration of wealth and power in their psychopathic hands.

Well the moderate please the world group of leaders in Israel have done nothing but let innocent Israelis die at the hands of Arabs so I say this type of thinking needs to be kiboshed in Israel at the moment, especially as the Arabs are looking like they will try to attack Israel again.

This was probably done because Acorn kids are over there singing the praise Obama song.

Israelis always have the right to learn what they want and can go live where ever they want. If you want to be an Israeli citizen you should support a one strong united Israel or leave.

Arabs have one mission they long to fulfill and that is to drive the Jews into the sea, if you think they wont try it again then you really need to be on meds. Not you yourself but people in general. Arabs will never live in peace with anyone who they think is in their way to world domination.
