What is going on with the Mid Atlantic Ridge?

I have been following earthquakes for quiet some time now. Last week there was a unusual number of earthquakes on the Mid Atlantic Ridge.

Today there is a Enviroment Pollution Alert coming from the same area.

Does anyone have any information as to what may be going on here?

The damage done is high. Is there a major Oil Spill? Is there a Large underwater Volcanic Eruption?

You have to click on the tabs above to read the descriptions and updates. This is another floating trash pile of plastic. apparently it is N E of the Bahamas, and extends for 500 miles! It is a serious hazard for sea life.

Not related to Earthquakes or Oil Spills. Just Human Waste.

A huge expanse of floating plastic debris has been documented for the first time in the North Atlantic Ocean. The size of the affected area rivals the "great Pacific garbage patch" in the world's other great ocean basin, which generated an outcry over the effects of plastic waste on marine wildlife. The new plastic waste, which was discovered in an area of the Atlantic to the east of Bermuda, consists mostly of fragments no bigger than a few millimetres wide. But their concentrations and the area of the sea that is covered have caused consternation among marine biologists studying the phenomenon. Using fine-mesh nets towed from a research ship, the scientists collected more than 64,000 individual plastic pieces at 6,100 locations out at sea over the 22-year period of the survey. The highest concentrations were centred at approximately the same latitude as Atlanta, Georgia (32 degrees North) but extended about 500 miles north and south of this line. Kara Lavender Law from the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, said the size of the Atlantic "garbage patch" was roughly equal to the one in the Pacific, where circulating currents of the North Pacific Gyre have trapped it over a wide area to the north of the equator.

Well, that is just nasty!!!! Something really must be done about this. I do not understand why Comany's think that it is okay to pollute our oceans this way. Just because the ocean's are vast does not mean they should be dumping ground. I do not know how much more it will take before we face a immediate major environmental crisis from all the carelessness!!!

Companies?

It's people. People who throw plastic bottles (and stuff) into streams and rivers. They wash to ocean.

It's fishermen who use plastic floats that break loose.

It's people.

Well yeah, but how does that explain to the OP how floating plastic bottles and waste generates an increase in earthquake activity in the region he's asking about?

Did you read the OP at all?

He's asking about an increase in earthquakes, not flotsam.

Here's a few links for you mate.

This article is talking about a 6.0+ quake in the area, and theorize it's connected to the eruptions on Iceland, that runs near the fault.

LINK: www.pamil-visions.net...

Here's the gist;

Evidence and Theories

While there is not concrete evidence of this, people (even some experts) see these events as cause for heightened awareness – certainly not alarm. The location of this event, along the same fault which runs very close to Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Of even more interest is the possible connections between tectonic movement atop the already unstable relationship between Eyjafjallajökull and its larger and more powerful neighbor Katla. While Katla’s live cam shows the mountain’s dormant state, the connection between these two volcanoes is well documented. When Eyjafjallajökull, the larger and more dangerous Katla follows.

There's also a discussion about this from about a week ago here:

www.godlikeproductions.com...

And a report of a 4.5 quake from the USGS here:

neic.usgs.gov...

You wanted to discuss quakes and not floating plastics right?

Yes, my intent was the earthquakes that have been occuring there. Last week there was a mini swarm so to speak and the area is quiet active. The garbage just adds to what's going on there. Kinda odd that the garbage is sort of gathering in the area of the quakes.

IDK maybe the quakes were caused by the garbage. Mother natures growled and was saying - hey don't dump on me

Yes people have done all of this - last I knew people owned company's Phlange. The larger majority of the junk in our oceans are caused by company's which are owned by people that dump in the ocean. When they - the company's remove trash from dumps where do you think they dump it?

That's one of the most active areas, no surprises there.

And I don't think the garbage makes any difference, it's floating, not at the bottom of the ocean.

Yes a very active area. There have been little swarms going on there as well - or "sequence of events" as it is also known. This ridge/fault runs right through Iceland. Yes, the bottles are floating there. Does it have to do with the buoyance of the water there in the area of these "Sequence of Events"?

Do ships affect that area?

If they do not, why should a large garbage patch, also floating, affect it?

The mid-atlantic ridge is highly interesting. Take a look at how it split Iceland in two:
images.google.com...

Also, from my research, Atlantis was place either right on or very close to the mid-atlantic ridge in between latin america and africa, and the survivors ended up in both latin americas and africa (egypt) and managed to get in touch with eachother at later point in history due to their knowledge of that past event and also because they most likely had already been in both those places before (check the coc aine mummies of Egypt, and the hashish mummies of Peru - revealing that there was a trade route between the two continents as coc aine comes from south america, while hashish from africa - nicotine was also found in the egyptian mummies, another non-american substance)

Hmmm - I am thinking we are not on the same page here. Maybe not the garbage that is effecting the ridge, but what is happening on the bottom by the ridge is effecting - drawing of the garbage is where I am going on this? It appears to me that something is going on - what I do not know - - why is the plastic floating in the area that has been seismically active. There are black smokers down there as well - is the buoyancy of the water effected or a intake of of water into the earth somehow pulling this garbage to this area and then just "floating" there? I really don't know - just seeams odd/strange/worth investigation to me.

OK, I understand it now, sorry for that.

The strongest reasons for the presence of the garbage on any area are the winds and the currents, and I don't think that this recent activity was strong enough to change the currents outside that specific area, so I guess that it's just a coincidence.

PS: could you be more specific about this activity from last week that you are talking about? Thanks in advance.

Thanks.

I asked because I thought it could be the Azores area, and for that area is not unusual to have 60 earthquakes in a month, although these last were a little stronger than usual, but even those were nothing special.

There are even two known cases of new islands appearing during a large underwater eruption and disappearing some time after.

Here are all earthquakes for the Azores area in August, up to this moment.
