NEW ORLEANS -- Nearly four months since the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and more than a month since a temporary cap stopped the flow of crude, there are conflicting reports on the amount of oil still polluting coastal waters.
Scientists at the University of Georgia say as much as 79 percent of the oil that gushed from the well remains a threat to the ecosystem.
They based their findings on a new analysis of government data.
"The impacts of oil are still there," said Samantha Joye, UGA professor of marine sciences. "There's oil in the water. There's oil on the sea floor. There are going to be impacts to the system."
