There seems to be no other option. The Mayak bomb factory and 1000 sq. kilometers around the factory is one of the most contaminated places on earth. Both the Chernobyla and Mayak area is burning spewing contaminated smoke into the air.

Either way, nothing to joke about or play with. Considering it's really hard for any one average person to detect contaminants in the enviroment.

Russian Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu said on August 5 that in the event of a fire in forests in the Bryansk region, radioactive particles could be propelled into the air.

It says this radioactive material will remain in the atmosphere until rained out over the months. I'm no professional, but it seems every country has the potential to become a radioactive hotbed depending on how the atmospheric currents blow.

Stock up on vitamin c & e. It will help.

I really hope some degree of control can be obtained. Can this be verified?

Nonsense. There has been numerous studies which prove that ascorbic acid helps with radiation poisoning dating back to the 1940's.
