Thanks to the above posters, for the clarifications on the Council's roles, and more specifics about the assembly of the collective Bible we know of
today.
I don't think the Bible (or any religious text really) was created to be a tool of control. It was likely created to provide some common ideas about
right and wrong, and record a people's view of the Universe and our role in it. However, that doesn't mean that later figures didn't seize on such
tools and subvert their original purpose, using such texts as justification for their own agendas or ideas. Such is the nature of man (especially in
men with power)...
While not a Christian, or any other ism really, I do believe in not throwing out the baby with the bathwater, and the Bible (as with many other
religious texts) does have some good content that makes it certainly worthy of study.
