How can it be used as "fraud prevention"? If you are making fake SS cards, why not just copy that number from the original card?
Besides, ever watch what the DMV (or other people) does with your card? They look at the front and make sure it's signed. They don't check that red
number at all. So who "checks" the red number and when?
It's a serial number for that "bill" (just like on dollar bills) assigned to your SSN account, so if you ever get "cashed in", the bankers can
verify you are a valid bill and redeemable for currency. (FEMA camps anyone?)
