MoD blocks release of UFO files , page 1

The release of files about a Ministry of Defence civil servant-turned-UFO expert has been blocked.

Nick Pope has drawn on his experiences working for Britain's official UFO investigation unit for a number of books about aliens and strange sights in the skies.

Fellow UFO researcher David Clarke made a Freedom of Information request in 2007 for internal MoD documents about Mr Pope's decision to speak publicly about his conversion from sceptic to believer in the possibility that extra-terrestrials are visiting Earth.

But more than three years later, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has upheld the department's refusal to publish the files because they contain personal information.

Seems they make more excuses surely they have something in them files that they do not want let out IMHO.

most files will hold personnel information
they could just black out the personnel info and release the rest
its just excuse after exuse

S & F as this type of obstruction needs to be seen every time this happens. Sensitive information can be blacked out--the bottom line is there not releasing these files because they know that some type of proof is in there.

The issue is I think that the information being requested is about specific person. So all the information about him would be considered personal. If Pope himself were to request them that might change things. Thats the way it works in US anyway. So why did he not to begin with? The documents requested just seem to be how they should handle his writing of books and talking about UFOs while he was with MoD. That would make it harder to black line anything having to with Pope as the entire thing is about him. Pope should request them and that should lead to its release, if UK FOIAs work like the US.
