I first thought they'd probably slipped of a boat during transport, rather than deployed in wooden boxes, unless of course, someone wanted the locals to be taking them home.

The snippet does say "apparently swept from North Korea by torrential rains", this may not be the case.

The worst in me thinks maybe SK/US could have floated the boxes up the river to throw another log in the fire, but this also may not be the case.

alot of mines from the vietnam era and korean war where made in woden boxes to prevent them from being found by metal detectors and mine sweepers. they are very effective and actually quite common now adays in afgan and iraq

If they didn't respond to a ship being attacked, why would they respond to water mines killing a few? Nothing will happen from this.

Although, the water mines do cause some controversy by themselves. If you stand on the borders between North and South, you can see citizens of North Korea trying to escape but blowing up when they hit the mines. Crazy stuff.

That's called unverified allegation.

Please do not distribute misinformation without knowing what you are talking about.

There were ongoing military drill by the US and South Korea.

In terms of the rules of the court, allegations should be supported by concrete proof to convince the jury to convict anyone.

I don't buy this allegation. Why?

It is too obvious and easy to finger point.

Could be that a North Korean boat that was carrying these boxes sunk/flipped in the river and then these boxes of landmines floated down the river into South Korean territory.

There is more to the story than presented. Mines are not likely to explode when still packed for shipment. Three possibilities, a severe malfunction of the safety mechanism on the mine and its trigger, it was boodytrapped, or the finders tinkered with it to their misfortune.

But, instead of omitting it I decided to leave it.

No, I did not mean any insult.

And yes, though I do believe thought the TPTB in North Korea are 'overly mouthy' and provocative, I do NOT believe the people as a whole support what their leaders tout.

So, in the interest of making a point I'll leave the off color 'joke' admitting ahead of time it was unnecessary on many fronts.

Hopefully you'll get my intent/meaning, that being, I firmly believe we need to do all we can to downplay the 'hype' coming from the TPTB in Korea North, not support them, and definitely not add to them.

I am inclined to agree. Mines in wooden boxes usually means they are still disarmed and in shipping-mode if you know what I mean.

Three distinct possibilities in my mind, all of which have been mentioned here:

1.) The mines were defective and were armed and ready to blow in their containers.
2.) The mines were purposely armed and then sent afloat in wooden crates (odd tactic)
3.) The fishermen made the fatal mistake of arming the mines, intentionally or unintentionally.

i really hope this doesnt lead to anything bigger., my brother just left to south korea yesterday. has to spend his last 12 months over there. the last thing i want is a phone call asking my family to identify a body. im not too informed about the relations between n.korea and s.korea, but boxes full of landmines cant help any

the thing that's not coming across very well in this thread is the that the mine is a "WOODEN BOX MINE" NOT A "MINE IN A WOODEN BOX." They are designed to detonate after a certain amount of pressure is placed on them, or the box is opened. These guys found a wooden box, and got curious. Unfortunately they paid the price for that curiousity.

I have been on a notice that almost all new 2010 posters are doing things like this,.
It is gonna cause an issue eventually and rules may be tightened.
