DND computers used to change Wikipedia site

www.cbc.ca

A Defence Department spokesperson confirms computers at the department's research agency were used to alter a Wikipedia page entry about the Joint Strike Fighter jet and the Conservative government's decision to spend as much as $18 billion on the aircraft.

Those edits included the removal of information critical of the government's plan to buy the jets and the addition of insulting comments aimed at Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff.

This is rediculous! I find it extremely disturbing to see the government use such obviouse censurship of this, I understand that no one likes negative criticism (even the government) but what ever happened to freedom of speech? Last time I checked freedom of speech was on of our rights! The removal of the posters opinion is completely unconstitutional.

Hmm I figured that the Canadians on ATS would find this interesting. I know I sure did. I figured that our government censured stuff but I honestly did not think they would be stupid enough to edit a Wiki page.

Just supprised that the Canadian Govt. was dumb enough to do that and not think that it would be traced back to them.

It's well known that governments and intelligence services look over and edit wikipedia...don't know how this surprises anyone. It's all a bit sad if you ask me...must be desperate.

Thats what I was thinking. Desperate.

Sad really, how these evil geniuses are at heart little more than spoiled children.

And thats what we need to remember. These people are used to being able to get away with anything, anywhere, at any time. They have lived so long behind the curtain of secrecy and privilege that they believe they are invincible. Because behind the curtain, they met no challenge.

Now that we are dragging them out into the light, what are we going to find?

Will they be big scary people of superhuman intelligence and strength?

Or will they be pretty darn average, and the only reason they have done so well against us is the enormous advantage they have over time created for themselves and written into law?

I think its the latter, personally.

I know it’s not going to be a popular opinion, but I don’t think that this was under direction from the Canadian government. This looks like the work of an individual, perhaps working on the project..

In one entry, all information outlining the criticism of the jets and the plan to buy them was removed. In another, someone added that Ignatieff thought the deal to buy the planes for Canada was an "awesome, amazing decision to proceed with this contract." In reality, Ignatieff has been critical of the sole-source contract, calling for a reconvening of the defence committee to examine the decision.

Another version of the entry inserted that Ignatieff has six toes on each foot.

If this was under direction of the Canadian government it would not have included such juvenile attacks on Ignatieff like he had six toes on each foot - they would have made it look more legitimate.

That is freedom of speech, look at it this way:

The people have the freedom to say what they want to say on there. Just as ANYONE has the freedom of editing those pages. I have the power to edit wiki pages, and so does our government. Don't like them taking stuff off? Then go put it back on.
