Probably more common than you would think. I'm sure there are quite a few people who are a just a few degrees from going off the deep end. Some
people have a very hard time coping with things in general and let them compound.
Take your average day for example and add these - Get behind a crappy driver, Hit every stop light, Restaurant messes up your order, Cashier is a
little rude to you, Spill your drink on your nice clean shirt, Get a flat tire, Get chewed out by your boss, Find out someone in your family is sick,
An unexpected expense pops up, etc. etc. etc.
All of these things on their own are fairly trivial, easy to deal with. For most people they're shortly out of your mind when done with. Some however
let these things get to them, slowly, over months and months. You let little things pile up over time you will eventually hit a breaking point. Some
people's breaking points are lower than others and you have something like this happen.
Hope your boss can get the help he needs. When someone finally snaps it's never a good thing.
